Year 3/4 Lord Somers Camp

Students were asked to write a 'Snapshot of a Small Moment in Time' about their favourite part of camp. Here are their responses.

"My favourite was building a raft. We made it from wood, tubes and ropes. We also saw some dolphins in the sea. Later we made a foxhole in the sand. That night we had lasagne 

for dinner."  Alfred

 

"As I woke up to the bird tweeting and the girls laughing, I got up and got ready. We had breakfast then we went down to the beach. We walked along the beach. There were three groups: the Dolphins, Seals and Sharks. I was a Shark, our team leaders were Ellie and Erin. They were both girls. We kept walking along the beach and we saw a pod of dolphins. They were so cool they came up so close to us. Then we followed a trail, Erin and Ellie talked about the plants. We could try some of the plants, my favourite one was the salt bush. Then we walked to a house and there was a story to it and it went like this. 'There was a man with a wife and he was very good at playing the piano. He invited everyone to have dinner that night, the man said that he felt weird so he went up stairs to his room and then the wife heard a big thud! When the the wife went upstairs there was a trail of blood but no husband.' I felt spooked after that." Anna

 

"Have you ever played fox holes? Well I have, let me tell you about the game. First you have to dig a hole that you and your friends can fit in, we had twenty minutes to build a hole. The team leader calls out ‘fox holes’ in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and if you are not in another person's hole before 1 you're out! We played 3 rounds and in the second round I came 2nd. I was pretty excited for Kye because he came first. This is a new game that we learnt and I really enjoyed it." Archie

 

"Ouch! The paddle of the kayak landed on me when we were playing a game. Now I'm out and then two boys tied for first. Harriet  and I took ages putting the kayak into the water. We finally did it with help from the teachers. When we were in the water one of the shark leaders Ez, grabbed our kayak and told us, 'paddle when I say.' She put us on to a wave and we paddled and Harriet and I capsized. When we were paddling back to shore Harriet and I got stuck on a massive rock. The teachers were laughing at us. Then I pushed the kayak all the way back to shore." Billie

 

"Splash! I headed into the water of the gooey lake. The mud felt like it was sucking me into the ground. Then we continued walking to the beach. I got to the ocean and we got into our kayaks. In my kayak was Finn, Xavier and me. The waves were so big that we struggled to get out. Then we caught a big wave and woosh! we capsized and Xavier got trapped under the kayak. Don’t worry he was ok." Charlie

 

"I had made an almost indestructible hole and wall. I used the spinning technique to make my amazing fortress. I had made mine much faster than my friends did. When I was finished I was proud and happy of myself. Then I helped my good friend Corbin. After he was finished he said he wanted to continue and I said that that was what I felt like as well, but I knew that I should help my friends even though I wanted to continue." Clarke

"Come on Seals, we are going to do screen printing. Ok, let's draw. I really wanted my drawing to win, I tried my hardest but it didn't win. When they were making the final drawing we played cricket and I hit the ball into the bush. They then called us in and we got are t-shirts." Corbin

 

"As we took off to the Amazing Lord Somers Camp, I stepped off the bus and I was flabbergasted. We had heaps of fun but I want to write about something that puzzled me and it might puzzle you too! I was so excited for my next activity, bush walking! We got off the sand and entered the track. A few minutes later one of our team leaders Eden said to us, “This here is a real haunted house!” I felt a shiver down my spine. ’’Really?” I questioned Eden. “Yep,” she said. ‘’Oh Yeah, How is it Haunted?’’ said Maisy. This is how the story goes.... So there was three people living in the mansion and one day they didn't have enough food and so the parents went out and they said to their daughter, ‘’If we don't come back hide in the bunker.’’ And they never came back so she hid in the bunker and it locked on her when she went in and she was never found again because no one could find the bunker" …  Edith

 

"My favourite part was when we sang happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. We sang really loudly to celebrate Alfred’s birthday. This was a real highlight! It was so much fun we all went to his room and Alfred was so happy. I was really happy too. I was having so much fun." Flynn

 

"Summer and I pushed with all our might, trying to get Mel into the water. With a great splash we succeeded. Splash! Into the water she went, she was drenched! I kept on jumping in. I loved it! On the way back to camp I saw quicksand and I couldn’t resist stepping in it. I went into quicksand and got stuck. Mel helped me out and I cleaned my feet in the inlet." Hamish

 

“Ten minutes left,'' said our group camp leaders and I was digging like a dog. “Five minutes left!” they said again and I was still digging like a dog. “One minute left,” they said for the last time and you’ll never believe this but I was still digging like a maniac dog. And finally they said, “Times up guys.” And with that my masterpiece hole of greatness was done. Now picture this: you're me, playing this game, sand is in my mouth and some is in my eyes because I am so eager to win this game of foxholes. I am so tightly curled up in this hole, just me and my two other friends. One of them just got eliminated so now this means it's just me and my last opponent, a classic one on one duel and he doesn't even know who he's up against. It's not even a question who's going to win because there's only one right answer which is definitely me. If my maths are correct, which of course they always are, there has to be no chance of me losing. And over a period of about seven rounds I realised this guy wasn't joking around anymore so I stopped being nice. Then about three rounds later we both were panicking over which hole we should have got in and with three seconds left I found the hole I was to hide in. So I did a quick tuck and roll to win the game of foxholes. To be honest he never stood a chance against me to begin with and with that the game of foxholes was over with one man standing which is and will always be me." Harry

 

"My tummy growled as I walked over to the mess hall for dinner and I could smell something truly delicious. When I sat down at the table I was served lasagne and vegetables on a plate. My friends and I played Chinese whispers as we ate our dinner and some of the whispers were really funny. After dinner we were served caramel cake with bright red strawberry sauce. After that I was so full I could burst." Indie 

 

"At camp we went kayaking. First we had to listen to the instructions and then we got into the kayaks. The sand was like quicksand, my feet sunk in pretty deep. In my kayak were Lachie and Kye. The lake water was sooo dirty.  Anyway we paddled out to the beach. We got to catch waves in our kayak. We had to paddle far away from this rock. So Lachie and Kye and I paddled away and then we didn't see this big wave coming and then we capsized. I got out of the boat and we all jumped back in and then we capsized again. We got back in and we paddled onto the sand. We played a game and then we walked back to eat lunch and then we did our next activity. Camp was the best!" Jack B

 

"As I heard the fun bell ring for activities I was suddenly so excited because my group, The Sharks, were going kayaking. As we were walking down to the beach our leaders went through some drills. Then we started to see the ocean. It was so windy. My feet suddenly got stuck in quicksand, it was disgusting. My friends and I laughed so hard. A few minutes later we got to the beach and we played some beach games. Now we were getting in the water. Harry and Lachie jumped into our kayak and only after a few seconds we fell in!  After kayaking we got to have a free swim for a while. It was so much fun. We were body surfing and diving under waves. When we finished we were absolutely FREEZING! Luckily the warm showers warmed us up. It was the best day ever." Jack F

 

"Ahhh! As a I tripped I thought I was going to fall into the quicksand but I caught myself before I could. Capoow! As I jumped into the kayak it tipped while I was on a wave and I fell on a gigantic rock and cut both of my legs. When we went through the estuary I thought I was going to hit all the rocks on the right hand side but I didn't, which was good. We had to walk on tiny rocks that really hurt and that was the second time I had kayaked." Jeremy

 

"SPLASH, my kayak went when it tipped over. HAHA, I went when my friend's kayak capsized. SQUAWK, the seagulls went when we capsized." Taki

 

"We got off the bus and I was really excited. Five minutes later Jack, one of the camp leaders, told us to get into our groups which were Sharks, Dolphins or Seals. I was in the Dolphins. Our first activity was kayaking. We walked down to the river. My group leaders Yaz and Steph taught us how to kayak. In my kayak was Jack B, Lochy W and I was in the back of the kayak. Lochy was in the front and Jack was in the middle. We paddled down the river. Matilda, Tahlia and Zara's kayak was catching up, we were racing to the bank of the river. We won the race!" Kye

 

"Splash!!!! I put my feet into the gross, brown, smelly water to walk to the beach to do some kayaking. But first we did some games because we were too excited to go kayaking, we played a game where you had to run around. We then got to go to the kayaks to put them in the water and my friends who were in my kayak were Jack and Harry. We got to catch waves with the kayak in the ocean. One of the waves was really big so we went with that one but when we were heading to the sand on the big wave, our kayak flipped. Then we had a free swim in the water for five minutes. After this we had to go back to camp. While we were going back to the swell we pushed Billie and Harriet into the wall and they couldn't move. When we went back we had warm showers. After the showers they gave us jam donuts and they were really good." Lachlan L 

 

"Has someone ever told you about a scary story before and you ask so many questions but they don't know the answer?  Well I have. At Lord Somers Camp we went for a walk and then we went around a corner and there was a spooky house. Eden, our camp leader, told us about the story that went with the house. 

There was a family living there, a mum, dad and their daughter. They ran out of supplies so they told their daughter if we do not come back hide in the bunker and there is supply in the bunker for two months. Her parents never came back and people say the girl is still in the bunker. The other group was told a different story! Mister Coolart was playing the piano in front of all his friends and family when he felt sick so he went up stairs into bed. The people downstairs heard a thump upstairs so they rushed upstairs and there was a trail of blood and they never found his body." Lily

 

"Splash! As I hopped in the kayak. We were waiting for everyone to make their way to the ocean. I had three awesome people in my kayak, Jack B,  Kye D and myself. The ocean got the better of us as we crashed into the waves. A humongous wave knocked us off the kayak! As I crashed into the water it was so cold that I got a shock from it. We did so well at paddling because I am a sailor and I had a blast." Lochlan W

 

"Ahhh! Watch out, here comes a big wave. "Lean back," I yell at Zara and Tahlia as everyone around us were capsizing. I laugh as we bumped into each other and nearly hit other people in the head with our swift paddles. Everyone heads into shore and parks there kayaks. Our team leaders, Steph and Yaz tell us that we can head back though the water to where the kayaks are stored." Matilda

 

"Yuck!" I said as we walked to the kayaking, the seaweed smelled so gross. Once we walked along the estuary to the beach it was so beautiful. Erin and Ellie taught us how to kayak. I was in the kayak with Jeremy, we rode lots of waves. Then I was swimming in the sea, the waves were super huge.  When we got back to put our kayaks away I felt so upset because my thongs got washed away with the incoming tide. My friend Lachie L had to swim to get them back for me." Max

 

"There were shivers up my spine, hearing the stories about a haunted house. What happened to the family and will they ever find the bunker? Our peaceful, quiet walk 

turned into a scary story about parents who disappeared forever. But when we came back I found out every group had heard a different story! It lead me to believe that the story 

wasn’t true." Olive

 

"

‘Quest’, one of the team leaders called out. We were going to do loads of team activities! I was feeling a little nervous as I didn’t know what we were going to do. The first challenge was we had to take our shoes off and build a tower with them. The first time it fell but the second time it stayed but we did not win, it was another team. Another thing we had to do was play heads and tails. It was so hard to win a game. I survived the first round but the second I lost. When there was only one person standing they won the game. Then we played rock paper scissors but I knew that I was going to go out the first round and I did! It was a draw between the Seals and the Dolphins. Yay, we at least won something!!" Olivia

 

"Have you ever seen a haunted house at a CAMP? Well I have, we all thought we were going on a simple walk not expecting to run into a haunted spooky house! Hearing the story made my hands tingle. It was CREEPY! So here is the story. One simple day a family of three were in a beautiful house that many would like to own. The parents needed to go to get some food from the shop so they told their daughter if they didn't come back she was to hide in the bunker with a supply of food for a few months. The daughter and the parents were never heard from again. I wonder if the girl inside the bunker is still alive?" Raine

 

"Wow! I did not think the water was that colour. Splash! As we jumped into the cold. brown water of the creek. We paddled through the water all the way to the ocean where the water was harder to kayak in. We played a game called finding nemo while Ms Lumsden went to go help some people who had somehow capsized in the calmest water. Finding nemo is my new favourite game. The trick to not capsizing is to paddle really hard backwards.  This  was my first camp and probably the best one I'll ever go too!" Shiloh

 

"As I walked into the dining room I could hear the music banging and I closed my eyes and walked in. I opened my eyes and saw flashing lights and then the music made me groove. We all looked amazing, even stunning! I was glowing from head to toe and from the tips of my fingers to my tummy. We danced and danced and played musical statues until we dropped. At the end of the disco the teachers handed out Freddo frogs and we went crazy!" Summer

 

"Crash! The cold salty waves splashed over our kayak and made us almost tip. We were going down the narrow rocky stream towards the glimmering ocean to surf the waves on the kayak. When we were near the rocky part we got stuck on a big rock so I had to get out and push us till we were off the rock. We were in a race with one of the other kayaks and we won against them. When we were in the ocean we had to be careful because there was a rock and if we banged into that we could damage the kayak or hurt ourselves." Tahlia

 

"Splash! As I jumped into the water of a yucky, mucky estuary. As I jumped in I was like oh no as my feet sunk into the sand. I thought I was going to die but lucky for me it was not too deep. But I really struggled to get out of the sand. Then we caught a wave and we tipped over. I got stuck under the kayak but I eventually got out. I personally believe that kayaking was the best thing at Lord Somers camp." Xavier
