In Focus: Year 7 Digital Technology
At Edgars Creek Secondary College, Digital Technology has gone from strength to strength as a subject area. In this edition of the College Newsletter, we enter the digital technology learning space and learn more about what students are learning in this innovative subject.
What is Digital Technology?
Compared to the others in the Victorian Curriculum, Digital Technology is a relatively new and developing curriculum area. At its core, Digital Technology as a subject is about 'enabling students to become confident and creative developers of digital solutions through the application of information systems and specific ways of thinking about problem solving' (VCAA).
A mandated part of the Victorian Curriculum, this subject isn't just about coding - it aims to engage students in designing, creating, managing, and evaluating digital solutions to an array of digital problems, from apps to robots and anything digital in between.
The use of digital technologies is a mandated component of the Victorian Curriculum F-10 and must be substantially addressed by every school in their curriculum program(s). Digital Learning in Schools
Digital Technology at Edgars Creek SC
At Edgars Creek Secondary College, students in Years 7 and 8 undertake a term of Digital Technology each year.
In Year 7, students focus on digital solutions, culminating in the designing and creation of a digital game based on the retro games of the 80s and 90s, such as Wonder Woman: 1984.
Take a look at some of the digital games that our students have created: https://sites.google.com/education.vic.gov.au/ecsc-digital-tech/year-7-digital-technology/tutorial-creations?authuser=0In Year 8, students step it up a notch, exploring and examining all things robotics. This culminates in a Shark Tank-style project, where teams of students propose a potential robotic solution to one of the UN Development Goals.
