OLD McKINNON FC

OLD McKINNON FOOTBALL CLUB

During the final term of 2016, against the background of looming VCE exams, the idea was born to set up an Old McKinnon Football team. These trail blazing students, with the help of Mr Noble, formed a partnership with the Glen Eira Football Club to provide the infrastructure to get this dream off the ground.

In that first season of competition in 2017, we fielded an Under 19s Boys side in the VAFA competition. The side were very competitive, losing in the finals to the eventual runners-up in Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School.

The following season in 2018, the side won the Premiership, in just their second season in the competition. The momentum of Old McKinnon was growing, and in 2019 this saw the club field a side in the women’s competition. This side went on to win the Premiership in their first year of competition. A remarkable achievement.

Fast forward to 2023, in our 7th year in partnership with the Glen Eira Football Club, and a significant cohort of McKinnon alumni grace the field every weekend in the Seniors, Reserves, and Thirds sides for Glen Eira.

This year we have so many current and former students involved that we have 2 Under 19 Boys sides in the VAFA competition, along with those involved in the women’s side as well.

The men’s senior and reserves sides both sit on top of the ladder in Division 1 with two matches left in their seasons.

The women’s side has finished 2nd on the ladder and will be playing in their Semi Final against Powerhouse this Saturday 19 August at 9:20am at Ross Gregory Oval in Albert Park.

The Old McKinnon Under 19 Boys are currently 4th on a very tight ladder with 3 matches to go. Hopefully a couple of wins in these final rounds will see them secure a double chance and some confidence heading into the finals series.

Any students interested in joining the Old McKinnon Football Club are encouraged to speak to current students who play there, and keep an eye out for information regarding next season very soon.

OLD McKINNON RISING STAR

McKinnon alumni Joel Chilcott (Class of 2022) recently received the VAFA Rising Star Nomination across the competition in Round 15.

A product of McKinnon Secondary College – Joel Chilcott came-up through the Old McKinnon / Glen Eira U19s program sharing the spoils of the U19s Best and Fairest in 2022. Still eligible for U19s football, Joel has become a permanent fixture in the table topping Glen Eira Gryphons senior squad in 2023.

Boasting a large frame and strength well beyond his years, Joel is among the club’s elite when it comes to attack on the ball and/or ball carrier. His forward pressure has become a hallmark of his well-rounded game as he holds down a key position spot as Centre Half Forward.

We wish Joel all the best for the rest of the season in the VAFA as finals approach for the senior side at Glen Eira, along with the Old McKinnon U19s side.
