Girls Big Day Out

By Rachael Brown, 9I

On the 28th of April I went to the Gordon’s East Geelong campus to participate in the Girls Big Day Out for Year 9 students.

I participated in two trade subjects and they were Cabinet Making & Joinery (CM&J) for the first half of the day and Engineering for the second. In the CM&J class we built a CD box.  We had to saw a finger hole so we could lift the lid, nail the two walls to the base-back and front pieces and sand everything over until it was smooth. I enjoyed this greatly as there was hardly any theory and it was definitely hands-on.  I also made new friends from Sacred Heart in this class that were also in my other class that day.

Engineering was great. I got to use drill press and a lathe to create a small game of Hanoi.  It was made of acrylic and when it was finished it looked like glass. These are definitely skills I wish to use in the future and I would highly recommend the program to anyone who enjoys hands-on learning.
