Swimming Sports

With the weather being perfect, everyone headed to the Hamilton Olympic Swimming pool for the Annual House Swimming event. The first of the All-school events saw the swimmers eagerly hitting the water to compete for their respective Houses. As is the tradition at Monivae, Mrs. Houlihan had the tunes pumping, many requested by the students. It was great to see so many students stepping up and filling the gaps in races where needed. A huge thank you to all the Parents who volunteered throughout the day and assisted in making the day run smoothly.

The swimming was so close at the end of the individual races, it came down to the relays and participation events to determine the Winner.

GD Swimming

Two weeks after the House swimming, 54 students headed back to the Hamilton Olympic Swimming pool to compete against other schools in the Glenelg Division. With many students taking up the offer from Ms. Keath to swim train at Lunchtimes after the House swimming, the Monivae Team headed into the day feeling confident.

The day started slowly with the distance swims of 400m free, 200m free, and then straight into the 100m events.  These were followed closely with the 50m events before onto the relays.

The Individual swimmers were on fire from the start pushing the clock for each of their races.  Many came home with a blue ribbon. Stella Raymond had another successful day in the pool by breaking a further 4 records at the GD level. Hayley Jellie broke a 48 year old record, as well as one that has stood for 10 years. Other students who broke records were Oliver Homer and  Zak Wan Ullok.

With such success in the pool, we had Hayley Jellie, Zak Wan Ullok, Zoe Rouse and Stella Raymond all win their respective Age group Champions. This success meant that Monivae won the Girls championship as well as the overall win for the GD Swimming.

GWR Swimming

A strong team of 40 headed to Horsham for the annual Greater Western Region Swimming Carnival. The team started well, finishing in the top 5 for the first 10 events for Monivae. Stella Raymond won our first win in the 50m breaststroke. She then went on to win each of her events in freestyle, butterfly and backstroke. Zoe Rouse and Zak Wan Ullok also had success in the pool. These 3 swimmers and their success in the pool will see them head to the State Competition early next Term. Along with these swimmers we also have 3 Relay teams lined up for the State finals. I would like to wish them all the very best next Term.

House Athletics

The weather for the nnual House Athletics didn’t look too good early in the morning, however it quickly passed and the day was underway. The girls hit the track first and it was great to see so many competing and cheering their friends on, while the boys tried their hands at the Field events. At lunch time the groups changed over and continued their events. The enthusiasm at both the Track and Field events was sensational. The School spirit was in full charge as students continued to encourage and cheer their fellow students on, no matter where they placed in the race.

At lunchtime the scores were very close as the sheets continued to be handed to the Data entry Staff. Glenelg slowly started to gain some more points and eventually were successful in taking out the overall win.

On Monday 7th March the SSV Secondary School Golf event was held down at the Camperdown Golf Club. The course played tough with the tricky greens, hilly features and gusty winds making it a challenge.

After completing eighteen holes results were out with Zac Elliot coming 3rd in Junior Boys, Harlie Manson was placed 11th in Junior Boys and myself taking out Senior Girls. We are now waiting to see if we qualify to the State Finals with the Junior Final being played at Gisborne Golf Club and the Senior Final at Gardiner's Run Golf Club. We'd like to thank Golf Australia for running the Event and Sarah Byron for organising our attendance.

Cricket v THAC

Our 1st XI Cricket team, although not at full strength, headed to the Hamilton College turf to compete in the Annual 40 over Cricket match. Already not at full strength, the team turned up and was further depleted to 10 players on the day due to illness and injury. Our boys hit the field with enthusiasm although not entirely confident. The Bowlers stepped up and kept College to all out for 108 runs, with Lachie Page taking 5w for 7 runs. As Monivae went into bat, they knew that there was a chance to win, but they had to bat smart. Noah Cameron wielded the willow making 65 with 1x 6 and 10 x4s, he remained at the crease making a great partnership with Josh Grant to take our score to 83, before Josh’s wicket fell. Noah continued to bat and lost his wicket when the score was 106. By the 24th over Monivae had made 109 runs and we had won.  A massive Thankyou to Mr. Robbie Cook who volunteered to coach the boys and Mrs. Julie Dohle as the Team Manager. Your help is very much appreciated.

House Cross Country

Next Wednesday we will be running our final full School Sporting event, the House Cross Country. All Students will be involved in the Cross Country whether by running or jogging/walking. Students have been emailed a link for them to register if they wish to compete by running and subsequently be 'timed'. This allows Students to have the opportunity to compete at the GD Cross Country in Term 2.  More information for the Cross Country will be email to students at a later stage.
