AFLQ Schools Cup – North Queensland Championships

In Week 3, 68 students travelled to Townsville to represent St Augustine’s in the AFLQ Schools Cup North Queensland Championships.

The Junior team (Years 7–8) faced St Brendan's College in the semi-final. After a hard-fought opening quarter, the boys took control of the match to record an impressive 71–14 victory and secure their place in the grand final. It was a fantastic team performance, with Cian Butler, Lewis Williams, Ryan Williams, Patrick Quilty and Hudson Croxford among the standout players.

The Juniors then faced Ignatius Park College in the grand final. Despite a determined effort, they were defeated 56–40, bringing their AFLQ Schools Cup campaign to a close. Lewis Williams once again led from the front in a tough and physical contest, while Patrick Quilty, Hudson Croxford, Cian Butler and Harry Herold were recognised among the team's best players.

The Youth team (Years 9–10) and Senior team (Years 11–12) both enjoyed outstanding campaigns. The Youth side defeated The Cathedral College 87–15 in the semi-final before producing another excellent team performance to overcome Ignatius Park College 60–33 in the grand final. Congratulations to Oliver Lavis, who was deservedly named Player of the Final. Other notable performers for the youth team included Thomas Kitch, Lucas Bursztynowicz and James Chenery.

The senior boys continued the dominant form they displayed throughout the CISSA competition, conceding just one goal across the entire tournament. They opened with a commanding 102–9 victory over Rockhampton Grammar before defeating Ignatius Park College 71–4 in the grand final. Congratulations to Matthew McCoy, who was named Player of the Final after another outstanding performance. Matthew was well supported by Jack-Levi Hume, Nash Courtney, Samson Pittorino and goal sneak Sam Barber who kicked 6 goals throughout the championship.

Both the Youth and Senior teams have now qualified for the AFLQ Schools Cup State Championships, to be held on the Sunshine Coast in Term 4. We wish both teams the very best as they prepare to represent St Augustine's against the best in the state.

First XI Cricket

In a strong start to the season, St Augustine’s First XI Cricket team recorded two convincing victories in Round 1 of the T20 competition at Walker Road, Edmonton.

In the opening match against Smithfield State High School, Saints won the toss and batted first, posting an impressive 2/158 in a reduced 15 overs match. Ian de Lange led the way with a well-compiled 57 runs, while Will Palmer provided valuable support with 32 runs. In reply, the Saints bowling attack dominated from the outset, restricting Smithfield to 7/23 from their 15 overs. Ryan Scarborough was outstanding with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for just 6 runs in a remarkable spell.

The team carried this momentum into their second match against Newman Catholic College. Batting first once again, Saints produced an exceptional total of 1/183 again from 15 overs. Ian de Lange continued his outstanding form, finishing unbeaten on 101 not out, while Archie Ferguson provided excellent support with 49 not out in an unbroken partnership. Newman Catholic College battled hard but could only reach 4/55 from their 15 overs, giving Saints another comprehensive victory. The First XI displayed excellent batting depth, disciplined bowling, and strong fielding throughout the day, setting an excellent platform for the remainder of the season.

The team progressed to the FNQ Finals, played today, and faced the Tableland Region champions. They won and now advance further in the competition. 

Intermediate Cricket

The Intermediate cricket A and B teams played in a T15 competition recently and both performed well with 3 out of the 4 games resulting in wins. The teams played against St Andrews and MacKillop colleges with the A’s winning both matches and progressing to the next round. The B team beat MacKillop comfortably but went down fighting in their game against St Andrew's only beaten in the penultimate over. 

For the B team special mention goes to Charlie Whitling and Flynn Twining, who after a disastrous start for the batting side, down 3/6, came up with a 50 partnership to post a creditable 5/76. For the A team it was a great team effort with the batsmen scoring freely, both Jasper Creighton and Jaianshpreet Singh scoring 50s, and the bowlers accuracy pinning down the batsmen, cutting runs down to a trickle, before blasting them out. The A team progressed to the next stage with 3 games on Friday against St Andrews, Tully and Atherton.

Bulls Masters - Cricket

St Augustine's was fortunate to have a visit from the Bulls Masters.

Joe Dawes and Nathan Reardon spent time with our senior cricketers, offering some helpful coaching advice.

JSS

Our JSS teams have opened the 2026 season in commanding form, winning nine of their first ten fixtures across the opening two rounds of the competition.

Round 1 — v St Mary's, Wednesday 5 August

The season began at home against St Mary's, and the AFL side set the tone with a 99–0 result. Basketball followed with a 42–26 win, touch football came through a genuine contest to win 7–5, and volleyball took their match in straight sets, 2–0.

The one blemish came in soccer, where St Mary's defended stoutly and took the game 1–0. It was a tight, well-played contest and a good early reminder that no fixture in this competition is a given.

Round 2 — v St Andrew's, Wednesday 12 August

The boys travelled to St Andrew's in Round 2 and were untroubled across all five sports.

AFL again led the way with an 81–1 win. Basketball ran out 66–33 winners, and soccer responded to the previous week's loss emphatically with a 5–0 result. Touch football won 10–1, and volleyball completed the clean sweep 2–0.

Two rounds in, the record stands at nine wins from ten matches. This places us in first place overall after two rounds.

Year 7 Rugby League 9s 

St Augustine's College fielded two Year 7 Rugby League 9s teams at the Peninsula School Sport Rugby League 9s carnival. St Augustine's 1 went a perfect 4-0 through the round games, while St Augustine's 2 finished 2-2. 

St Augustine's 1 opened with a strong win over Innisfail State College 1, then backed it up beating Bentley Park College, MacKillop Catholic College and St Andrews Catholic College to remain undefeated. St Augustine's 2 split their pool games, downing Newman Catholic College but dropping games to Innisfail State College 2 and Atherton SHS. St Augustine's 2 day was capped off with a 7-6 victory against Smithfield SHS in which Khylan Gorrell scored a try on the full-time siren to secure the win. 

St Augustine's 1 progressed to the Grand Final against Mossman SHS and were involved in a shootout early on, before pulling away for a 10-7 win. Hudson Bartlett was the standout in the decider, chasing a kick to save a try when the game was in the balance while also scoring four tries of his own, backing up an undefeated pool campaign with Team 1 where he crossed in three of his side's four games. Regory Kepa was right alongside him, scoring in all five of Team 1's matches (pool games plus the grand final) for a team-high eight tries on the day. For Team 2, Archie Ford led the way with seven tries across his pool games. 

A great result for the College, with strong performances by all students on the day, showing that St Augustine's Rugby League has a bright future.
