Women's Day 2025
Maribyrnong College celebrated International Women's Day on Friday 7th March, reflecting on the theme: Accelerate Action.
‘Collectively, we can Accelerate Action for gender equality. At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity, according to data from the World Economic Forum. Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality’. https://www.internationalwomensday.com/
Special guest, Sophie Taylor, spoke to a theater full of female students about her personal success story and the hurdles she had to overcome at a young age. Sophie Taylor is an Australian hockey player, a defender for the Australian Women's National Field Hockey team. She is an athlete with a passion for her dual career working as a Physiotherapist. In her spare time, Sophie continues to further develop herself as part of the Victorian Institute of Sport ambassador programs, studying and coaching. Sophie connected beautifully with the audience as she spoke of her struggles with chronic fatigue syndrome during high school and her commitment to sporting success during a time when young women in Sport was often challenged.
A celebratory morning tea then provided an opportunity for our female students to meet Sophie one-on-one and thank her for her inspiring words.
Students and staff also participated in various lunchtime activities to celebrate the females in our school community. We ran an exciting and sweaty Staff VS Students Netball game with our very talented students taking the win. Other lunchtime activities included writing appreciation messages to women in their lives, bracelet making and other art +craft activities whilst listening to tunes from influential female artists.
