Important changes to the NDIS – October 2026
The Australian Government is making some changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). These changes will happen gradually, and families might have questions about how this will affect their child and the supports they already have.
1. Changes to some NDIS funding
Starting 1 October 2026, the money for some types of support will begin to change when participants get a new plan, have their plan reviewed, or renew their plan.
- Social, economic and community participation: Funding for some supports in this area will be reduced by 50%.
- Improved daily living skills: Funding for some supports here will be reduced by 10%.
These changes will be introduced over 12 months. How they affect each person will depend on their individual plan and situation. Some supports in these groups will not be affected. Current plans can still be used until they are reviewed or renewed.
2. Changes to asking for a plan review
From 27 August 2026, new rules apply if you want to ask for a plan review before your scheduled review date. The request must come from the participant, their nominee, or their child representative, and must follow the correct process with supporting information.
Sometimes, a plan change might be better if the request is for a quick, small, or temporary change.
3. Changes to who can join the NDIS
There won’t be any changes to NDIS access rules until 1 January 2028. After that, new ways of checking eligibility will start, and current participants will be reviewed little by little over the next three years.
For now, families should keep using their current plans and supports as normal unless told otherwise.

If you have questions or want personalised help, please contact the NDIS Navigator at the school. You don’t need to wait until your child’s plan review to ask for help or advice.
Every child and family is different, and support can be adapted to suit your needs.
Please note: The NDIS Navigator offers information, guidance and help to support families with the NDIS. Funding decisions are still made by the NDIA.
