Learning Intention
To identify and understand words that end with the suffix -ette.
Overview of the Lesson
This week in spelling, students explored words ending in the suffix -ette. We looked at words such as kitchenette, rosette, silhouette, etiquette, cassette, omelette, baguette, palette, marionette and roulette.
We began by reading the Learning Intention and listening to the teacher use -ette words in sentences. Students then practised spelling the words on mini whiteboards before checking their spelling and identifying the common spelling pattern.
As a class, we discussed how -ette can sometimes mean small or a smaller version of something. Students also learned that some words ending in -ette originally came from the French language and are now commonly used in English.
To consolidate their learning, students completed three activities:
- matching words to their meanings
- filling in missing words in sentences
- identifying a word from a set of clues
These activities helped students practise the -ette spelling pattern and develop their understanding of the meanings of words ending in -ette.
How you can support your children at home:
- Focus on patterns, not just memorisation. Help children notice patterns such as light, night, right or word families such as play, played, playing.
- Encourage children to use a dictionary or thesaurus when they encounter an unknown word. This can help them become more independent.
- Play with words. Word games, rhyming games, crosswords, word searches and simple spelling games can make practice enjoyable.
For example, Scrabble, Boggle, Bananagram etc.
