Learning Intention: To identify the rule or pattern within words
Learning Overview:
This week, students explored the “sm” consonant blend and learned to identify patterns within words. Through guided word discovery, students listened carefully to sounds, noticed where “sm” appeared in words, and practised saying and writing words such as smell, smile, small, smart, smoke, smash and smooth. Students also applied their learning by applying their learning to a spelling worksheet.
What the students did:
Students consolidated their understanding of the “sm” word pattern through a range of spelling activities. They practised reading and writing sm words, used the words in sentences, matched words to their meanings through drawing, completed partially written words using picture clues, and searched for target words in a word search. These activities supported students to recognise the “sm” pattern, spell familiar words accurately and connect spelling with meaning.

What you can do at home:
Families can support this learning by practising ‘sm’ words at home.
Students could:
- Look for ‘sm’ words in books or around the home.
- Say and spell words such as smell, smile, small, smart, smoke, smash and smooth.
- Play “How many ‘sm’ words can you think of?”
- Choose an ‘sm’ word and use it in a sentence.
Have an adult say an ‘sm’ word and try writing it independently.
Encourage students to say the word slowly and listen for each sound as they write.
