A snapshot into Spelling
Learning Experience Overview:
We explored the phoneme /ng/ and the grapheme ‘ng’. Students listened for the /ng/ phoneme in words and identified whether they could hear it in the middle or at the end of a word. We discussed that /ng/ is not heard at the beginning of English words. Students also practised blending and segmenting words containing the grapheme ‘ng’.
What students were asked to do:
- Listen for the /ng/ sound in words.
- Identify whether they hear /ng/ in the middle or end of a word.
- Practice reading and writing ng words in their phonics book.
- Use sound boxes to segment words and identify each sound.
What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:
- Practice reading words with ng (e.g. sing, ring, long, king).
- Play I Spy and look for words containing ng.
- Listen for the /ng/ sound in everyday words and identify whether you hear it in the middle or end.
