Living Our MITS Values as Boarding Students

Coming to MITS is a big step. It means leaving home, family, and Country to take up an opportunity that can shape future of our young people. It’s a journey that takes real stamina and a strong sense of purpose, guided by the values we live by at MITS: respect, courage, care, and culture.

Stamina is something our students already know well. It’s what helps them get through long days at school, busy boarding routines, and moments when being away from home feels hard. Our students come from families and communities where parents, carers, and Elders show strength every day—working hard, caring for others, and staying connected to community. At MITS, our students carry that same strength with them. Stamina isn’t just about our students pushing through; it’s about growing, learning, and backing themselves in a new place.

Purpose matters just as much. Our students knowing why they are here—whether it’s for their schooling experiences, their future goals, or the hopes their family holds for them—helps them stay focused when things feel challenging. Our cultures remind us of the importance of walking a strong path, learning from those who came before us, and using our opportunities to give back. That sense of purpose helps make each day at MITS meaningful.

Living away from home isn’t always easy, but boarding helps build independence, confidence, and resilience. At MITS, the boarding house becomes a place of care and connection—a community where we look out for one another, respect differences, and stay strong in who we are. Culture, relationships, and belonging are central to how we live and learn together.

Time at home during holidays is also deeply important. Being back with family, on Country, and in community helps our young people to recharge and stay connected to who they are. These moments remind them as to why they’re here. Returning to MITS on the first day after holidays shows courage and commitment—and respect for the sacrifices made by families and communities so our students can access education and opportunity.

As MITS boarding students, our young people are learning more than academics in Melbourne. By living our values of respect, courage, care, and culture, they are building the stamina and purpose they need not just for school, but for life beyond MITS—strong in themselves, connected to their communities, and ready to contribute.

Wishing MITS students, families, staff, and communities a safe Easter break.

Kind regards,

Lia
