Auslan

with Mrs Sarah Bailey

Family, Numbers and Animals

Our term started with a "People in my Family' Auslan Performance at our Open Morning . Mrs Bailey was so excited and proud to see her students standing up ready to sign that she forgot to take a photo! We did enjoy teaching our school community some signs for family related words too.

During our Numbers unit, students learned to sign numbers 1–10 and multiples of 10s through songs, games and group activities. We've been signing along to Ten in the Bed while practising counting skills and Grade 1/2 students are learning teen numbers.  Students also learned how to ask and answer simple questions with correct Auslan sentence structure such as “Your age what?” and respond using the Auslan signs for their age. Bingo games, ping pong counting challenges and small group conversations helped reinforce number recognition and signing skills in a fun and supportive way.

Students have also been exploring a variety of animal signs including Australian animals, farm animals and wild animals. Students worked together to create an “ACPS Zoo” using paper crafts and used flashcards and memory games to learn new vocabulary. Prep students also completed animal dot-to-dot activities while practising their signs. Games such as Jenga Alphabet and Animal Memory supported communication, teamwork and recall skills.

In coming weeks,  students will revisit alphabet finger spelling and begin learning feeling signs to help express emotions and communicate more confidently in everyday situations.

I look forward to sharing more learning from your children again soon!
