Grade 3 and 4

Term 2 2026
The second term has truly hit the ground running! From the magic of the stage to the grit of the athletics field, our school community has leaned into every challenge with incredible energy. It’s been a whirlwind of growth, teamwork, and hands-on discovery.
Before we dive into our recent highlights, the excitement is reaching a fever pitch—we are heading off to camp in just a few days!
Note to Parents: Please ensure all final gear checks are complete for camp this week. We can’t wait to add "Outdoor Adventure" to our list of Term 2 successes!
Open Morning
It was lovely to see so many families in the classrooms on open morning. The Year 4s shared their learning about shapes in a symmetry activity in which students and family members creates some fabulous shape pictures. The Year 3s shared some of their Literacy learning, reading an exerpt from Storm Boy and creating drawings of pelicans.
Aladdin
We are still in awe of our production of Aladdin. We were transported us to a whole new world, showcasing the immense creativity and dedication of our performers.
Cross Country
Our Year 3 and 4 students certainly hit the ground running this term at our School Cross Country event in Week 2! With beautiful sunshine, a brand-new riverside course and plenty of enthusiasm, the afternoon was filled with energy, determination and lots of smiling faces. Whether students sprinted to the finish line, jogged with friends, enjoyed a steady walk or proudly cheered from the sidelines, it was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and showing great school spirit.
Following the school event, several students proudly represented our school at the District Cross Country competition at Ruffey Lake Park. Once again, the weather was perfect for an afternoon of running, and our students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and perseverance throughout the event. Congratulations to Ted, who has now progressed through to the Division Cross Country competition.
Mother's Day Breakfast
Our Mother’s Day Breakfast was a joyful and lively morning held at school, filled with smiles, laughter and plenty of delicious food. Students were excited to share breakfast with their special guests, enjoying time together in a warm and festive school community setting. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and thank the incredible mums and carers who play such an important role in our students’ lives.
Life Ed
Students across Years 3 and 4 recently participated in the Life Ed program, where they had the exciting opportunity to meet Harold the giraffe. Through engaging and interactive sessions, Year 3 students explored the themes of friendship and feelings, learning how to recognise emotions in themselves and others, and developing strategies to build positive relationships.
Year 4 students took part in the Be Cyberwise program, where they learnt about responsible online behaviour, digital safety and how to make safe choices when using technology. These sessions supported students in developing their understanding of how to stay safe, respectful and responsible both online and offline.
Interschool Sport
Our Grade 4 students have joined the Year 5 and 6 students in Interschool Sports. All of the teams have been out in full force, practising great sportsmanship and strategic play against our neighbouring schools.
Students have been participating in AFL (9 vs 9), Soccer (9 vs 9), Netball, Girls Teeball and Bat Tennis.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have been exploring the historical significance of First Contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and European settlers during the time of the First Fleet, aligned with the Victorian Curriculum Levels 3–4 History strand. Students have investigated the purpose of the First Fleet voyage, the experiences of people aboard the ships, and the journey to Australia. They have also examined the perspectives and experiences of Aboriginal peoples and European settlers, including the positive and negative impacts and interactions that occurred following settlement. Through this learning, students are developing their understanding of continuity and change, historical perspectives, and the effects of colonisation on Australia’s First Peoples.
English
Throughout this term, students have been actively engaged in our English learning block by studying and analysing the class novel, Storm Boy. Students have explored themes, characters and language features within the text while developing new vocabulary and strengthening their reading fluency through partner and choral reading activities.
In preparation for informative writing tasks, students have also undertaken research into pelicans and the Coorong region, the setting of Storm Boy, to support the development of their own information reports. In addition, students have continued to build upon their literacy skills through weekly grammar, spelling and handwriting lessons, with a focus on accuracy, presentation and language conventions.
Mathematics
We have made an excellent start to the term in Mathematics. During our unit on two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, students developed their understanding of geometric properties by classifying shapes according to key features such as faces, surfaces, edges and vertices. Students identified shapes within the school environment, constructed models, and compared the suitability of different shapes for specific purposes within their designs.
Students also extended their geometric reasoning by identifying two-dimensional shapes within three-dimensional objects and exploring the concepts of line and rotational symmetry. They developed their ability to recognise, describe and analyse symmetrical properties in a range of shapes and objects.
In Number and Algebra, students have also been developing their understanding of fractions. They have been learning to recognise, represent, compare and order fractions, as well as identify equivalent fractions using visual models and number lines. Students have also begun exploring the connection between fractions and decimals, including representing tenths and hundredths and recognising decimals as another way of expressing fractional quantities. Students have been encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking and apply their understanding to a range of practical and problem-solving tasks.
Assembly
On 25th May, Year 4 students were given the opportunity to step up and lead the school assembly. The assembly, presented in the format of a television-style program called Creeker TV, featured the latest school news, sports reports, interviews and student performances. Students took on a range of roles with confidence and enthusiasm, showcasing their creativity, communication skills and teamwork. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by both students and staff. Well done 4M!
Thrive
To conclude the term, students will take part in our Whole School Big Freeze and Thrive Day celebrations on the final day of the term. This will be a fun-filled day of activities designed to promote school spirit, connection and well-being, bringing the term to an exciting and positive close for all students.
TRP
As part of The Resilience Project, Year 3 and 4 students have been engaging in lessons 7–10, which have focused on strengthening emotional awareness, empathy, and positive relationships. Across these sessions, students have explored the importance of gratitude, kindness, and emotional regulation, and have been encouraged to reflect on practical strategies they can use in their everyday lives to build resilience and wellbeing.
A particular highlight for the Year 4 cohort has been the creation of their gratitude video, which is attached. This task provided students with the opportunity to express what they are thankful for and to share positive messages with their peers and school community. The project has supported students in developing a deeper understanding of the value of gratitude and its impact on overall well-being.
