Grade 5 and 6

Term 2
Term 2 is here and it has already delivered a lot. With Aladdin, Cross Country, Life Ed and Interschool Sports, the students and staff have continued to show up and continue to embrace rich learning within and outside the classroom. Here are some of the things we have been up to so far:
English: Natural Disasters
This term is all things Natural Disasters. During our English block, students have been exploring the topic of natural disasters through reading, writing and research activities. Over the past five weeks, we have focused on fires, droughts, floods and cyclones, developing our understanding of how and why these events occur and the impact they have on people and the environment. Students have been building their skills in locating and evaluating information by navigating websites, scanning texts for key details and recording important facts. They have also been using this knowledge to plan and write informative texts, strengthening their ability to organise ideas, use subject-specific vocabulary and communicate information clearly. We can't wait to share our final projects at the end of this term...stay tuned.
Numeracy:
In Mathematics the Grade 5 students have been busy and productive as students have been working hard to stretch their mathematical thinking and build confidence across several key concepts.
Here is a quick look at what we have been covering:
- Multiplication Mastery: Students have been consolidating their skills in multiplication, strengthening their mental strategies and written methods to solve increasingly complex problems.
- Fantastic Fractions: We have taken our understanding of fractions to the next level by learning how to apply the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to fractional numbers.
- Angles in Action: We have also dived into geometry, practicing how to accurately make, measure, and read angles using protractors, as well as identifying different angle types in the world around us.
Thank you for your continued support at home with multiplication facts and real-world maths conversations—it makes a wonderful difference in the classroom!
Meanwhile, the Grade 6 students have been learning and exploring concepts of angles, time, length, area and perimeter, while also strengthening their knowledge of decimal numbers and converting between units of measurement.
As part of our measurement unit, students investigated angles and practised accurately measuring and constructing them using protractors.
A highlight of the unit was using masking tape on their tables to create and measure a variety of angles, allowing students to apply their learning in a practical and collaborative way. No school property was damaged in this learning session.
It has been wonderful to see students build confidence in using mathematical language, problem-solving strategies and real-world measurement skills throughout the term so far.
ALADDIN
Us as staff are always in awe at our students and a couple of weeks ago we had a moment of immense joy and proudness when we saw them perform on stage and working in their roles behind the scenes. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to attend, show up, and put this performance together. CONGRATULATIONS to the Cast of Aladdin! It was such an amazing show and you should be proud of all your efforts.
Also to those students who weren't in Aladdin, we see you and thank you for your patience and flexibility around this time. You also continued to show up and work hard.
Cross Country and Interschool Sports
Our school Cross Country in Week 2 was a highlight early this term. The sun was shining and we were at a new course down by the river. What a wonderful afternoon for a run. A big congratulations to everyone who gave it a go, whether it was a run, walk, stroll and talk or cheered on their friends. Thank you to our parent volunteers and Mr Webber for setting up this event for us. From this we had a number of students represent our school at District Cross Country at Ruffey Lake Park. Again the sun was shining for us and it was the perfect afternoon run. A special mention to Ryder N, Harlow G, Atanaz E, Piper D, Evie N and Ted W (Grade 4) who will go on to represent ACPS at District Cross Country next week.
Thank you Mr Smith and Ms Beattie for supporting the students on this day.
Term 2 has also seen the start of our Winter Interschool Sports. Our sports this term is AFL (9 vs 9), Soccer (9 vs 9), Netball, Girls Teeball and Bat Tennis. This term we have included the Grade 4 students and it was wonderful to see everyones participation in trying a new sport or showing their skills in something that are confident in. Our students are to be congratulated on their sportsmanship.
