Grade 3 Community News

Dear Year 3 Families,

It has been wonderful to see how well the students have settled back into school routines and embraced the learning opportunities this term. As we move through the next fortnight, we are excited to continue building on this positive start and dive deeper into our learning across all curriculum areas. The students have shown enthusiasm, resilience and a willingness to challenge themselves, and we look forward to seeing their confidence continue to grow.

Thank you for your continued support at home. We appreciate your partnership and look forward to another fantastic few weeks of learning in Year 3!

Text Reading

Students are continuing to read Storm Boy, developing their comprehension by exploring key events and characters in the story. We have been getting to know Storm Boy as he takes on the responsibility of caring for the pelicans, with a particular focus on Mr Percival, who was very sick and nursed back to health. Students are practicing summarising important events and discussing how characters' actions help us understand their personalities.

Sentence-Level Writing

Students are developing their note-taking skills by identifying the key words and phrases within sentences. They are learning how to record important information using key words, phrases, abbreviations, and symbols, helping them to summarise information clearly and efficiently.

Text-Level Writing

Students are continuing to develop their information reports about the Coorong, with a focus on writing the two body paragraphs using the SPO structure: a topic sentence, three supporting details, and a concluding sentence. They are also applying the key features of information reports, including using subheadings and writing in the present tense. This term, there is an increased focus on editing and revising, with students carefully reviewing their work to improve clarity, accuracy, and overall quality.

Mathematics:

This fortnight, students will continue building their number sense and problem-solving skills. They will learn how to regroup 4-digit numbers using number expanders to better understand place value. Students will also explore telling and working with time, identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes, and practice estimating answers to addition and subtraction problems. They will further develop their subtraction strategies by solving subtraction problems  with  internal zeros, helping them build confidence and accuracy when working with larger numbers.

In Week 4, students will be introduced to vertical multiplication with no regrouping, focusing on using the standard written method accurately. They will also investigate mass, learning to compare, measure, and solve practical problems involving weight. Students will further develop their problem-solving skills by solving different problems, using subtraction strategies to work out how much more or less one amount is compared to another.

Humanities:

Climate and Human Features of Australia

This week, students will explore Australia's diverse climate patterns and investigate how climate influences where people live and the types of human features found across the country. They will learn to describe different climate regions and explain how the environment shapes settlements, buildings, transport networks, and other constructed features.

Introducing Our Neighbour: New Zealand

In Week 4, students will be introduced to New Zealand as Australia's closest neighbour. They will identify and describe New Zealand's geographical characteristics, including its location, landforms, and natural features. Students will compare aspects of New Zealand's environment with Australia, developing a greater understanding of our neighbouring country and its unique geography.
