French News

Bonjour, dear parents and students,

I hope you are all keeping warm!

Thank you, students, for a fantastic start to the term. You have returned with positive attitudes, enthusiasm, and a strong willingness to learn. With the first three weeks of the term now complete, everyone is well on their way to success. Keep up the great work and continue this positive momentum!

Below is a snapshot of what each year level will be exploring over Week 3-4:

Prep

Students have been learning the names of different fruits in French and using them to answer the question « Qu'est-ce que c'est ? » ("What is it?"). Next, they will learn how to express which fruits and foods they like and dislike in French.

Grade 1

Students have been revising how to introduce themselves using « Je m'appelle… » ("My name is…") and say how old they are in French. They are now learning new food vocabulary and how to express their likes and dislikes. They will then combine these skills to share information about themselves in French.

Grade 2

Students have been learning the numbers 30–50 and using them in questions such as « Combien ? » ("How many?"). Next, they will learn the names of different body parts and practice identifying them on their bodies.

Grade 3

Students have been learning the names of wild animals in French while exploring how adjectives change to match the gender of nouns. Next, they will begin using adverbs to describe different actions and verbs.

Grade 4

Students have been learning how to pronounce common French letter combinations and applying these sounds to different words. Next, they will explore reflexive verbs, which describe actions we do to ourselves (e.g. se réveiller = "to wake up"; je me réveille = "I wake up").

Grade 5

Students have been learning how to express different quantities of food by creating shopping lists (e.g., un kilo, un gram, un litre). Next, they will explore the five French accents and how they change the pronunciation and meaning of words (e.g. é, à, ï, ç, and ô).

Grade 6

Students will continue building their understanding of food quantities by creating shopping lists using more advanced vocabulary (e.g. un verre, une goutte, une gousse). They will then work in pairs to research one of the five French accents (é, à, ï, ç, or ô) and share their findings with the class.

Keep up the fantastic work, everyone! Your effort and enthusiasm will continue to lead to great success.
