Performing Arts News

Hi Tarneit Rise families,

Our drama unit inspired creativity, confidence and collaboration as students developed their acting and performance skills. Across the school, students explored different elements of drama through mime, puppetry, improvisation and filmmaking. These engaging activities encouraged students to think creatively, communicate effectively and work together while bringing stories and characters to life.

Prep students discovered the exciting world of mime in Week 3, learning how to tell stories without using words by relying on facial expressions, body movements and gestures. In Week 4, students explored how actors created different characters by changing the sound of their voice, experimenting with volume, pitch and expression to portray a variety of emotions.

Grade 1 students were introduced to the art of ventriloquism in Week 3, learning how performers created the illusion that a puppet was speaking while improvising short scenes using creative prompts. In Week 4, students applied these new skills by creating and performing their own puppet shows, where the puppeteer interacted with their puppet to present a story featuring a clear conflict and solution.

Grade 2 students continued developing their puppetry skills by exploring character through hand puppets and working in groups to improvise scenes using teacher prompts. During Week 4, students collaborated to rehearse and perform their own short puppet shows using simple scripts, focusing on expressive character voices, movement and teamwork.

Grade 3 students continued building their improvisation skills by focusing on the drama element of setting in Week 3. They explored how different locations influenced characters and stories before shifting their attention to conflict in Week 4, creating engaging improvised scenes where characters solved problems and overcame challenges.

Grade 4 students spent both weeks strengthening their improvisation skills with a particular focus on conflict. Through a variety of drama games and performance challenges, they explored how conflict created interesting stories while practising ways to develop believable characters and resolve dramatic situations.

Grade 5 students began by viewing and responding to the short films created in previous lessons, discussing the acting choices, characters and dramatic techniques they observed. In Week 4, students explored how actors interpreted scripts while beginning to storyboard their own short films, which they would continue developing throughout the term. They also participated in a range of acting workshops focusing on voice manipulation, body movement, gesture and facial expressions to create convincing performances for the screen.

Grade 6 students critically analysed the short films viewed in Week 3, evaluating how dramatic techniques, character development and performance choices contributed to effective storytelling. In Week 4, students began planning their own short films through script analysis and detailed storyboarding while refining advanced acting techniques including vocal control, expressive movement, gesture and nuanced facial expressions. These skills supported students as they prepared to create polished and engaging film performances later in the term.

It was wonderful to see students embracing new performance challenges and growing in confidence each week. We looked forward to watching their creativity continue to flourish as they further developed their drama, puppetry, improvisation and filmmaking skills throughout the remainder of the term.
