STSS

Welcome back to Term 2! This term brings some staffing changes to the STSS team. Mrs Ram left us at the end of Term 1 to start her maternity leave and Ms Cannizzaro will be leaving at the end of April to start her maternity leave. We wish them both the best as they welcome the newest additions to their families. Ms Madders will be taking on the role of the 'A' class teacher and Mrs Whelan will be taking over '6E'. 

Foundation – Year 2

In Term 1, our Foundation to Year 2 students explored Earth and Space Science. They learned about the differences between day and night, discovered natural resources around our school (such as plants, rocks and insects), and discussed how everyday items could be reused or recycled. This term, students began learning about Biological Science.

In Digital Technologies, Foundation and Year 1 students enjoyed creating digital collages using iPads and photos they took around the school. Year 2 students built their skills on Chromebooks, learning how to use features such as dragging and dropping, cropping and resizing images. In Term 2, all F–2 students began using Seesaw as a learning tool to share their work.

In Design Technologies, students explored creative ways to recycle and reuse everyday materials to give them a new purpose.

Year 3 – 4

In Term 1, Year 3 and 4 students explored Earth and Space Science, focusing on the properties of materials found on Earth, including minerals such as diamond and quartz. They also learned about different water sources, how water supports life, and the water cycle. This term, students began studying Biological Science.

In Digital Technologies, students developed their skills in safe and effective internet searching, such as click restraint, using key words and assessing the suitability of resources. They used these skills to research topics they were learning about in class.

In Design Technologies, students created their own geodes using clay, glue, sand and coloured salt crystals. They followed the design process by planning, creating and then reflecting on their work.

Year 5 – 6

In Term 1, Year 5 and 6 students studied Earth and Space Science, focusing on natural events that shape the Earth’s surface, such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes. They explored how these events occur and their impacts on the environment. This term, Year 5 students began Biological Science, while Year 6 students continued to deepen their understanding of Earth and Space Science.

In Digital Technologies, students worked with Grok Academy to learn coding through a visual programming platform called Blockly, where they earned points and challenged themselves alongside other students.

In Design Technologies, students simulated an earthquake model using matchsticks and plasticine, shaking their structures to test whether they could withstand an earthquake.
