Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Families,

Students had a wonderful time on their long day excursion to the Melbourne Museum, where they engaged in a range of exciting and educational experiences. A highlight of the day was the 3D movie, which students thoroughly enjoyed. It was fantastic to see their curiosity, enthusiasm, and engagement as they explored and learned together. We hope all families had a relaxing and enjoyable Easter break, and we look forward to a great term ahead.

Learning for the Week Ahead

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students are learning that we can communicate with others and with God in different ways, including through prayer and reflection. They are also exploring what it means to be part of a community with shared beliefs, and how this helps people feel connected, supported, and guided in their faith.

English:

In English, students are building their skills in reading, writing, and communication through our class novel Black Cockatoo. They are practising reading and answering questions about the story, while improving their fluency by reading accurately, smoothly, and with expression. Students are also learning new vocabulary from the novel and using these words in their work. In writing, students are learning how to write clear topic and concluding sentences, and to join ideas using words like because, but, and so. They are also learning the difference between direct and indirect speech, and how to change one into the other. In addition, students are developing their handwriting by practising letter formation and improving their typing skills. They are also beginning to write a character analysis based on the novel.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students are learning to solve addition and subtraction word problems. They are learning to identify different types of problems, such as combine, compare, and change. Students are practising how to draw a model to help them understand the problem and find the unknown. They are also learning to decide whether to use addition or subtraction, and to solve problems using the vertical algorithm.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students are reflecting on their learning from the term’s unit. They are completing a post-assessment to show what they have learned and understood. This allows students to demonstrate their knowledge, think about their progress, and celebrate their learning across the unit.

Auslan:

In Auslan, students are learning that eye contact and facial expressions are very important for clear communication. They are practising greeting routines and using appropriate eye contact and facial expressions to help show meaning. Through regular practice, students are building confidence in communicating effectively using Auslan.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social Emotional Learning, students are learning about trusted adults and how to seek help when they need it. They are exploring what trusted adults say and do, and how these adults help them feel safe, supported, and respected. Students are developing their ability to recognise who they can go to for help and how to ask for support in different situations.

Important Reminders

  • Please ensure that you are labelling your child's belongings.
