STUDENTS

Lisa Peterson

Year 11 student Lisa Peterson will represent Western Australia at the AKF Shotokan Karate National Tournament in October after winning her 15-17yo brown belt division in Perth earlier this month. Lisa said she was "pretty excited" to compete on the national stage for her third time, and was confident she was "going to win".

It won't be the first time. She claimed gold in three events at the same competition in 2023, and has full intentions of doing the same this year.

The 16-year-old has been working hard towards her goal, having been in the sport for five years, and currently training at least four times a week out of her Canning Vale gym.

"I'll be against the best of the best, so there's a lot of competition," she said, adding that her mum was very proud and supportive of what she has achieved.

Lisa started karate following a "cool" program at her school when she was in Year 6, and has lofty dreams to one day compete in the Olympics.

She encouraged others to consider taking up the sport, saying it has taught her self defence and connected her with lots of new friends.

"There is something for all different levels, even if you're a beginner you can do it," she said.

North Lake Senior Campus is proud of Lisa for qualifying for nationals and wishes her the best luck in Melbourne.
