Year 5/6 News

GRIP Leadership
Yesterday our Year 6 students (along with Miss McVeigh and Ms Duffy), attended GRIP Leadership Day in Bendigo. Students joined with Year 6 leaders from other district schools to learn about themselves as leaders. Sessions focussed on the qualities of a good leader, how to put their ideas for school improvement into action and the challenges that leaders can face. This was all delivered in a fun-filled way with lots of interaction between students from other schools. It was a great day and our students represented our school very well.
Literacy
This week in Literacy, students have been learning to organise and publish speeches using their voice and correct conventions. They have been focusing on using strong and precise word choices to make their speeches interesting and engaging. Students are also learning to show their personality and opinions clearly through their writing, while improving sentence fluency by creating sentences that flow smoothly and vary in length. Correct conventions, including capital letters, punctuation, and spelling, continue to be an important focus as students prepare and publish their speeches.
Word Work
This week in Word Work, students have been learning to identify and apply spelling patterns to write words accurately. They have been practising mapping individual sounds within words, segmenting sounds to help with spelling, and blending sounds to support reading fluency. Students are also exploring base words and learning how prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning of words. Throughout lessons, students have been building their understanding of important spelling concepts such as graphemes, phonemes, digraphs, trigraphs, prefixes, and suffixes, while also explaining why words are spelt in certain ways. Reading fluency has continued to be a focus, with students practising reading smoothly and with expression.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been learning to understand place value and decimal numbers. They are practising reading and writing decimal numbers and identifying the value of each digit within a number. Students are also developing their understanding of tenths and hundredths and learning how to convert fractions into decimal numbers. It has been fantastic to see students building confidence and accuracy in their mathematical thinking.
Thanks,
Chris, Trish and Tracey.
