Ethan Pearce (10P)

 

Back in June, Ethan was successful at applying for a place at the Regional Science Exchange (Rex program) at John Monash Science School (JMSS), where he joined a selected group of 20 Year 10 students from around Victoria with a shared passion for science.

 

The program involved an immersive six-day stay at JMSS, where Ethan participated in a variety of hands-on science workshops, culminating in a special STEM development workshop at Monash Tech School, where students worked on a project of their choosing.

We’re thrilled to report that Ethan’s project: Magnetic Levitation and the Impact of the Mass-to-Magnet Strength Ratio was chosen as one of the top five to be presented at the Australian Science Fair later in the year in November. Ethan will be allocated a mentor to continue his work over the next few months before showcasing his project alongside peers from around the country.

In the last week of Term 2, I had the opportunity, along with 19 other Year 10 students from regional Victoria, to attend a science exchange program at the John Monash Science School in Melbourne.

 

The week was filled with exciting and unique science-related activities, as well as visits to facilities around Monash University. Some of the highlights included chemistry and biology workshops, a fencing session, a tour of the Monash Wind Tunnel, the Lightscape exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens, and engineering activities at the John Monash Tech School.

 

One of my favourite experiences was touring the Melbourne Synchrotron, the largest particle accelerator in the Southern Hemisphere. It was fascinating to learn about the cutting-edge research taking place there and to see the facility up close.

 

The entire week was an incredible experience. I made many new friends who share my passion for science and enjoyed every opportunity to learn something new. I am also grateful to have been invited back later this year to participate in a Science Show, where I will investigate the most efficient weight to magnetic levitation ratio.
