Unit of Inquiry – Living Things Have Needs That Are Supported by Where They Live!

Habitat Investigations

Our Year One students have enthusiastically begun their new Unit of Inquiry, exploring the conceptual understanding; Living things have needs that are supported by where they live.

As part of this learning, students became habitat designers! They explored the different environments where animals live and discovered that every animal has four basic needs for survival: food, water, air and shelter.

Using toy animals and a range of creative materials, including LEGO, blocks, natural materials and craft supplies, students designed habitats that met the needs of their chosen animal. They carefully considered questions such as: What does my animal eat? Where will it find water? What can it use for shelter? Students then worked both independently and collaboratively to build their habitats.

It was wonderful to see students thinking like scientists as they compared habitats, discussed why different animals need different environments, and explained how each habitat supports life.

Our classrooms were buzzing with creativity, collaboration and curiosity as students shared ideas, solved problems and demonstrated their growing understanding of how habitats meet the needs of living things.
