Year Three Swimming Program
Our Year Three students made a fantastic start to their two week intensive swimming program at Keilor East Leisure Centre, beginning on Monday 27th July. Days were filled with fun, learning and plenty of time in the pool as students built their confidence and developed essential swimming and water safety skills.
The Swimming in Schools program provides students with valuable opportunities to improve their swimming ability while developing lifelong water safety knowledge. We were proud to see our Year Three students embrace the experience with enthusiasm.
Our Year Five students will begin their eight-day intensive swimming program on Monday 7th September. Please note that swimming lessons will not be held on Friday 11th September or Friday 18th September.
Swimming and water safety education is an important part of the Victorian Curriculum across all year levels. By the end of Year Six, students are expected to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to achieve the Victorian Water Safety Certificate, helping them become safe and confident in and around the water.
Fitness Unit
In Week Three of this term students in Year Three to Year Six monitor and track their fitness by participating in a range of fitness assessments that measure key components of physical fitness. These include endurance, speed, flexibility, strength, power, coordination, balance, agility, reaction time, hand-eye coordination, aerobic capacity and core strength.
Students complete a variety of fitness tests, including the Beep Test or 6-Minute Cooper Run, Vertical Jump, Sit and Reach, 1 Minute Skip, 20 Metre Sprint, Agility T-Test, Alternate Hand Wall Ball Toss Test, Ruler Catch Test and Ball Drop Reaction Test.
By recording and reviewing their results each term, students are encouraged to assess their own progress, set personal fitness goals and reflect on their improvement over time. This process helps students develop an understanding of the benefits of regular physical activity, the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and how setting achievable goals can improve both their fitness and overall wellbeing.
