STSS

Foundation – Year 2

Our junior students have continued to learn that the way objects move depends on factors such as their size, shape, materials and the amount of force applied. They have explored this through hands on activities such as investigating how objects move differently and creating puppets that use ‘push and pull’ forces. As part of their Design Technologies focus, students have also explored the features of different types of playground equipment and considered the characteristics of different playground materials.

Year 3 – Year 4

Middle years students have continued to explore heat energy and how it is used in everyday life. They have identified different ways humans use heat and investigated how we can feel heat and measure its effects. Students made predictions about which objects would be warmer or cooler, used thermometers to measure temperature, and discussed their results. Recently students have also begun to use the design process to make a plan and use materials to insulate ice in order to reduce heat transfer and melting.

Year 5 – Year 6

Our senior students have continued to deepen their understanding of light and how it can be produced from many sources. They have explored how light travels in a straight path and investigated how light can be absorbed, transmitted, reflected or refracted by different objects. In recent weeks, students have investigated these concepts through hands on activities including working in collaboration with others to plan, create and test a light maze by considering different design features that allow light to be reflected around obstacles to reach a set target.

Science Week Update:  “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Science for All”  was a great success with our students participating in a variety of tasks and investigations across all year levels. They also learned about scientists who first studied heat, light and forces in connection with their current learning focus. Below are some photos capturing examples of our students' recent learning explorations.

Enjoy your weekend,

The STSS Team
