Supporting Your Child to Flourish: Understanding the MACS Vision for Engagement

 

St Monica’s College, Epping, is part of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), which is committed to helping every student thrive academically, socially, and spiritually. A key part of this commitment is the Vision for Engagement, a position statement that outlines how schools, students and families can work together to create meaningful, positive learning experiences for all young people within our care.

 

This article aims to unpack the Vision for Engagement in clear, accessible terms, highlighting the pivotal role parents and carers play in helping their children flourish during their secondary school years.

 

The MACS Vision for Engagement recognises that learning is most effective when students feel connected to their school, their teachers, and their learning. Engagement is not just about attending school. It is about students feeling motivated, supported, and involved in their education.

 

The document emphasises that every student:

  • Has the right to feel safe, respected, and valued

  • Learns best when they experience belonging and purpose

  • Benefits from high expectations and supportive relationships

  • Can succeed when schools respond to their individual needs.

     

Put simply, engagement is about creating the conditions where students want to learn and are supported to do their best.

 

The secondary years bring significant changes for adolescents. Young people are developing independence, forming their identity, and navigating complex social and academic environments. It is also a time when some students may become disengaged from learning.

 

The Vision for Engagement highlights that when students are engaged:

  • They attend school regularly

  • They participate actively in learning

  • They build confidence and resilience

  • They achieve better academic and wellbeing outcomes.

     

Conversely, disengagement can lead to lower achievement, reduced wellbeing, and increased risk of early school leaving. This is why fostering engagement is a shared priority for schools and families.

 

MACS promotes a whole-child approach to education. This means schools are not only focused on academic results, but also on Emotional wellbeing, Social development, Spiritual growth and Physical health.

 

Engagement is strengthened when students feel understood as individuals and supported in all aspects of their lives.

 

Schools work to achieve this by:

  • Building positive teacher-student relationships

  • Designing relevant and challenging learning experiences

  • Providing wellbeing and pastoral care support

  • Encouraging student voice and leadership

 

Parents and carers are essential partners in their child’s learning journey. The Vision for Engagement clearly recognises that strong school-family partnerships are key to student success. Research consistently shows that when parents are involved in education, students are more likely to have higher motivation and achievement, to display positive behaviour to develop stronger confidence and self-esteem and importantly, to remain engaged with school.

 

There are many practical ways parents can help their children stay engaged.

 

Show Interest in Learning - Ask about your child’s day, their subjects, and what they are learning. Even simple conversations communicate that education matters.

 

Encourage Effort and Growth - Celebrate progress, not just results. Encourage persistence and a growth mindset when challenges arise.

 

Support Organisation and Routine - Help your child develop good study habits, manage their time, and maintain a balance between schoolwork and other commitments.

 

Maintain Open Communication with the School - Stay informed through school communications and reach out to College staff if you have concerns or questions. Working together leads to better outcomes.

 

Foster a Positive Attitude to School - Young people take cues from their parents. Speaking positively about school and learning can boost your child’s mindset.

 

Support Wellbeing - Ensure your child has enough sleep, healthy routines, and opportunities to talk about their feelings. Wellbeing and engagement go hand in hand.

 

The Vision for Engagement is built on the idea of partnership between students, families, and schools. Each group has an important role.

  • Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour

  • Schools create inclusive, supportive environments and high-quality learning experiences

  • Parents provide encouragement, structure, and connection between home and school

     

When these partnerships are strong, students are more likely to reach their potential.

 

It is normal for students to experience periods of disengagement, especially during adolescence. The Vision for Engagement encourages early and supportive responses when concerns arise. If your child is showing signs of disengagement such as reluctance to attend school, declining motivation, or changes in behaviour it is important to:

  • Talk openly with your child

  • Contact the school to share concerns

  • Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff

  • Seek additional support if needed

     

Early action and intervention can make a significant difference and help re-engage students before challenges escalate.

 

Ultimately, the MACS Vision for Engagement is about ensuring that every young person is known, valued, and supported to succeed. It recognises that engagement is not the responsibility of one group alone but rather, it is a shared effort.

 

As parents and carers, your role is powerful. The encouragement, expectations, and support you provide at home shape your child’s attitudes towards learning and has the capacity to influence their future pathways.

 

By working in partnership with our highly competent Monican staff, you help create the conditions for your child to discover their strengths, develop resilience and confidence, build meaningful relationships and to achieve their personal best.
