Connection

Parent Partnership is one of the ways we strengthen the connection between home and school at St Monica’s College. It brings parents and carers together with staff to help build community, support student learning and create meaningful opportunities for families to be involved in College life.

While academic coursework is the central component of school, co-curricular activities also play a huge role in a student’s life. Co-curricular activities are the non-academic courses available that give students the chance to learn new things, apply their knowledge in real-world contexts and connect with peers who share similar passions.

Connection to the College can be achieved in many meaningful ways. One of the greatest advantages of taking part in extracurricular activities is the opportunity to develop strong time management skills and connecting with others. By committing to activities beyond regular school hours, students learn to balance their academic responsibilities with other interests. This process fosters organisation, prioritisation, and the discipline to follow a schedule. These are essential skills that will benefit them well beyond their time at St Monica’s College.

Attending school regularly is essential for students’ academic progress, sense of wellbeing and overall confidence. Consistent attendance enables students to stay engaged with their learning, develop meaningful relationships and feel secure and connected within the school environment.

Attending homeroom at the beginning of the day plays a vital role in setting students up for success, both academically and personally. It provides a structured and calm start, allowing students to settle, organise their materials, and mentally prepare for the day ahead. This consistent routine helps reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of readiness for learning. Homeroom is also an important time for communicating key information through the student bulletin, ensuring that all students are informed about daily notices, expectations, and upcoming events. Beyond organisation and communication, homeroom promotes a strong pastoral connection, giving students a sense of belonging and an opportunity to check in with their teacher and peers. This supportive environment strengthens relationships and contributes to a positive and connected school culture.

While there are times when absence is unavoidable, it is important to be mindful that even occasional missed days can accumulate and affect a student’s progress. Every day at school offers important opportunities for instruction, feedback and social interaction that contribute to each student’s success. As a College community, we value our partnership with families in supporting and promoting regular attendance wherever possible.

The research is clear that consistent uniform and personal appearance expectations can contribute to a positive school culture, strengthen their identity and enhance their sense of belonging, and reduce the social pressures that can come from fashion and peer comparisons. When students wear their uniform with pride and present themselves neatly, it supports a shared sense of purpose and community. It also helps students focus on their learning by reducing distractions and emphasising respect for themselves, for others and for the learning environment.

We are grateful to our families for your ongoing support. Your partnership ensures that our young people can walk into school each morning feeling included, valued and part of something bigger, the SMC community.
