Environmental Group

The main focus for the Environmental Council this term is the 10c Earn and Return, recycling and the Spring planting.

The collection of the 10c Earn and Return containers has been very successful. The St Vincent de Paul Society has replaced the smaller bins with larger ones.  The aim for the school is to fill these three bins every two weeks. The Environmental Council needs all of the McCarthy community members to support this project. There are five of the round Earn and Return bins placed around the school. In addition, the recycle bins in each of the classrooms can also be used for the 10c containers. Each week, the 10c round bins and the classroom recycle bins are emptied into the three blue bins. These are collected when filled. All money raised goes to support local community projects run by St Vincent de Paul.

During the last month of Winter, the Environmental Council field teams started to prepare for Spring planting. Currently, trays of seeds are being planted as well as the new seedlings being transplanted into the tubes. This will allow them to grow into larger plants, which in turn will give these plants a better chance to survive when planted in Spring. The photo shows the second field team preparing the pots using the shredded paper from the school, placing wattle seeds into pots and the transfer of the small bottle brushes.

This term, the Environmental Council is looking at starting the Indigenous Field Team. The aim is to establish and maintain an Aboriginal food garden.
