Mathematics

In Year 7 and 8 Mathematics at McCarthy, we ask our students to complete a 20 minute block of numeracy homework 4 times per week. The main focus of this homework is Mangahigh, but it may also involve completion of modules in Maths Pathway.

A strong home-school partnership is vital for students’ success. Over the first half of this year, we have observed varying engagement with homework and we are encouraging parents to maintain a strong level of interest in your child’s homework routine.

Mathematics is a cumulative subject; each new concept builds on previous ones. Homework is essential for reinforcing classroom learning and developing crucial skills. By working together, we can assist your child to develop strong numeracy skills, build confidence, and establish effective study habits for their educational journey and beyond.

Educational research consistently shows that regular homework completion, especially in Mathematics, positively correlates with academic achievement. For high school students, strong engagement with homework significantly impacts grades and test scores.

A key benefit is developing automaticity in basic numeracy. Consistent practice allows students to recall facts effortlessly, freeing their working memory for higher-level problem-solving and critical thinking.

Beyond academics, homework cultivates essential study habits, time management, and self-discipline. These are invaluable life skills that extend beyond the classroom, preparing students for future success and independent learning. Homework provides an opportunity to review material, identify areas needing clarification, and take ownership of their learning.

We understand that encouraging homework can be challenging. Your role is not to teach the maths, but to create a supportive environment.

Here are some ways you can help:

  • Establish a Routine: Encourage a consistent time and quiet space for homework.
  • Show Interest: Ask your child about their homework.
  • Provide Support, Not Answers: Encourage them to use notes or examples. If truly stuck, suggest they mark the problem to ask a teacher the next day. The goal is independent problem-solving.
  • Celebrate Effort: Praise their persistence, even if answers aren't perfect. Focus on the learning process.
  • Communicate with the School: If your child consistently struggles or spends excessive time on homework, please reach out to us.

At McCarthy, we are committed to setting meaningful homework that reinforces learning. Our teachers are always available to offer support and guidance.
