Building Resilience in Grade 1/2 đ
During our Wellbeing Hour, Grade 1/2 students explored the important idea of resilience â what it means to be brave, give things a go, and keep trying when something feels challenging.Â
We discussed how being resilient does not mean that everything is easy or that we never feel upset. Instead, resilience can mean trying again, using a different strategy, taking time to calm ourselves, or asking someone for help.
Students explored four different types of resilience: physical resilience, emotional resilience, mental resilience and social resilience. We talked about how we can look after our bodies and keep going, manage big feelings, use positive thinking when learning becomes tricky, and reach out to others for support. Throughout the session, students practised helpful messages such as âI am brave,â âI can give it a go,â âI can keep trying,â and âI can ask for help.â
To finish the lesson, each student chose one area of resilience that connected with them and created a piece for our Resilience Wall Display. Students completed prompts such as âI calm my feelings byâŠâ, âMy heart is resilient when IâŠâ, and âI use my brain and donât give up whenâŠâ. It was wonderful to see the many thoughtful and personal ways students described what resilience looks like in their own lives.
Families can continue these conversations at home by noticing and celebrating moments of resilience â especially when children try something new, make a mistake and try again, manage a difficult feeling, or ask for help.Â
Our message to students is simple:
