Performing Arts

This term in Performing Arts, students will be taking a deep dive into the rich world of music genres. Across the weeks, we will explore pop, country, rock n'roll, jazz and motown, giving students a broad and engaging look at how different styles of music have shaped culture and performance.

Students will learn about the history behind each genre, including key artists, musical features and the social moments that helped these styles grow. They will also get to know some of the iconic songs that define each genre, listening closely for instruments, rhythms and expressive qualities that make each style unique.

Throughout the term, students will take part in listening activities, movement tasks and creative responses that help them understand how music communicates mood, story and identity. It is a lively and hands‑on unit that encourages curiosity, appreciation and confidence in performing arts.

Families might like to make this unit extra fun at home by creating a mini “genre of the week” playlist, having a quick guess‑the‑instrument challenge or sharing a favourite throwback song from when they were growing up. Even a five‑minute music clip together can spark great chats about what makes each genre unique. 

By the end of the unit, students will have a stronger understanding of how music evolves and influences culture. I look forward to seeing the way this knowledge enriches their listening skills and performance work.
