From the Foundation

and 1/2 Classrooms

Welcome to Term 3! We hope you all had a relaxing and restful break, and we would like to warmly welcome the new families joining the F-2 classes.

To support our students' transition back to Term 3, during Week 1 we completed a series of lessons from our Start Up program to revisit our school values, rights and responsibilities, e-safety habits etc. It has been wonderful to see our students getting back into their school routines and settling into the term.

Marrung:

Students in FHR created drawings of Bunjil, a creature from the Aboriginal culture who created the land, made the first people and taught the rules. How amazing are their drawings!

Their final copies are on display outside their classroom door.

Rights and Responsibilities:

We reviewed our school value of Responsibility and how we can be responsible for looking after our school environment and land. We brainstormed ways we can reduce rubbish, where the rubbish needs to go and recapped on our different bins at BPPS.

Additionally, we discussed our rights and responsibilities at school. Students then chose one right or responsibility to draw how they display this at school.

Numeracy game:

Students in Year 1/2 learnt a new Maths game last week called Strike. Students use the operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) to create the numbers from 1-10 using 3 numbers from a deck of cards. It is a great game to practice the operations and targeting different numbers.

Have a go playing at home and see how you go against your child!

Holiday Recount:

We loved hearing about the fun activities students go up to over their school holidays! Sounds like we had lots of busy families going on holidays, trips to the zoo, movies, play dates.

We recapped the elements of a recount including; who was there, what happened, where you went, how you felt, when it happened.

Our students did a great job remembering these recount elements from Terms 1 and 2 and wrote some amazing recounts!

Zones of Regulation:

Students recapped the 4 Zones of Regulation as well as emotions and times associated with each Zone. We discussed how we can have small and big problems, and the size of the problem can cause different reactions.

For example

  • Big problems - often involve red zone feelings
  • Medium problems - often involve yellow zone feelings
  • Little problems - often involve green zone feelings

Students recorded different sized problems they could have on a scale from 1-5 and then discussed what reaction these problems may cause and how we can regulate ourselves back to the green zone.

We also talked about self talk. Positive talk is called our ‘Inner coach’ for example telling yourself you did good on a maths test or after scoring a goal, congratulating yourself.  Negative talk is called our ‘Inner Critic’ for example telling yourself off after missing a goal or doing something silly in class. We looked at when each of these self talk gets used and how to make sure our 'Inner Coach' is the self talk we listen to.
