Numeracy
Big Idea Statement:
EQUIVALENCE: Any number, measure, numerical expression, algebraic expression, or equation can be represented in an infinite number of ways that have the same value.
The grade 5/6 students are focussing on decimals and fractions, they are learning to add and subtract and order from smallest to largest. Students are enjoying learning how to convert fractions so they have the same denominator before they can add or subtract them. This has been helping the students consolidate their understanding of factors and multiples. It has been amazing to see the growth the students have been showing.
In fluency, students are learning their 3 times tables, using the strategies of double/doubles and understanding that they are a pattern, ending in odd/even/odd/even.
Literacy
In Literacy, we are continuing with our unit on our menotr text 'Rivet Boy' throughout this unit, students have been making connections to the text and inferring the author's meaning. For the next couple of weeks, we will be having a focus on questioning. 'Questioning is a reading strategy that helps readers engage with a text. It helps to clarify what he or she is reading to better understand the text. Asking questions is a way to monitor your own comprehsension while reading.'
Throughout this unit, we have also been learning all about persuaive texts and have almost finished out piece on 'Children as salve labour is a violation of basic human rights.' We are very excited to read the finished texts.
Integrated Studies
Our Integrated Studies unit, is coming to an end in the next few weeks and students will start planning, researching, predicting and conducting their experiments of their choice. They have learnt about; accidental discoveries, electricity, light, Earth's tilt and seasons, states of matter and reversible and irreversible changes.
We can't wait to see everyone deliver and explain their findings of the experiment of their choosing.
