📖 At Home Reading 💻

At Beaufort Primary School, we value how much you are involved with your child’s education, and we love it when families ask us about what they can do at home to support the teaching we do at school.

In the Junior school, the biggest support you can give your child at home is reading to them and listening to them read.

However, we understand that family time looks different for everyone outside of school hours. Due to this, students in 1/2 are not assigned “home readers” which they must read to gain a prize or a certain level. While this can be encouraging for some, for some students this can cause anxiety and stress for them and for the family who are trying to complete this ‘homework’ and get diaries signed.

In the Junior school, we run an opt-in reading approach to take home books. If you would like your child to bring home practice books/pages that you can sit and listen to, please let me know and I can organise these to go home on Thursdays. Your child will need their blue satchel to borrow books. If this has been stored somewhere safe at home and is so safe that no-one knows where it is, another carry bag-type of satchel will be perfectly fine!

Alternatively, your child has been provided with a unique QR code they can scan to access their decodable reading books at home using a tablet or smart device. These QR codes will be coming home as a hard copy, as we know device access is sometimes easier for families to manage.

We have already had a practice at school of using the iPads to log into our Reading Library and having an explore of all the wonderful books at our just-right reading level. If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to reach out!

💭Sentence Writing✍🏻

Our students have continued to work so hard on being able to write longer, more detailed sentences about the mentor text we are reading this term - The Imagineer.

Over this past fortnight, students have been focusing on expanding their sentences by adding extra details about:

  • the who - who or what the sentence is about (noun)

  • the do - the doing word or the group of words that describe the action (verb)

  • the when - words describing time or duration of the action

  • the where - the location or setting the action occurred

  • description words to add to the nouns in our sentence (adjectives)

For an extra level up, students have also been working on including subordinating conjunctions to join their independent and dependent clauses! MIND. BLOWN!🤯

Our common examples are: if, when, before, after, even though, although, then, because - but there are many more that we can use once we get the hang of this dependent and independent clause thing!

📷PERMISSION TO PUBLISH PHOTOS🤳🏻

Some families may be wondering - "Hey, how come I don't see any photos of my child?"

This could be because you may not have approved the use of your child's photo yet!

In Xuno, it will pop up as a permission form - you just need to tick 'Approve'.

That's it! If you aren't sure, you can always email or message me to say you give permission for your child's photo to be in the newsletter, and I can approve this manually for you.
