4A

Mr Lloga, Mr Reid, Miss R and Miss Gale

We have been doing lots of things in 4A at the moment. Below is a recap of some of our work written by Nate and Aliza.

Literacy by Nate .

In literacy we have been working on independent and dependent clauses. What are they? Independent clauses are where you have a sentence that makes sense on its own. An example is . . . The cat sat on the mat. A dependent clause is something  that doesn't make sense on its own. An example is . . . It was tired. We can link independent and dependent clauses together by using a subordinating conjunction. These are words that connect them together. We use the acronym FANBOYS to remember the linking words. What are FANBOYS? Fanboys stands for For, And, Nor, But/Because, Or, Yet, and So.

We have been reading How to Train Your Dragon. We just finished the last chapter of the book. In the last chapter which is called ‘Hiccup the Useful’ we read about Hiccup surviving the Green Death which is a giant dragon that lives in the ocean. He survived it because he jammed his helmet in the dragon's fire hole which meant it couldn't breathe and it explodes. After this Hiccup gets the nickname ‘Hiccup the Useful’. He then talks about how the Vikings are starting to forget the danger of the dragons and the stories of the dragons.

Maths by Aliza

In Maths we have been learning about fractions and decimals by hundredths and tenths. Fractions are when you have something that is shared into parts equally. An example is I had one half of a pizza and you had the other half. We can show this by writing ½ . I feel that fractions are hard but interesting and fun to learn. We have also been learning about four times tables by skip counting and trying to memorise them. I think we are doing really well so far and I’m excited to learn more about them and continue our journey with times tables. I'm looking forward to learning my nine times tables because I want to be better at them.

In mental maths we have just moved on to adding seven. We have a worksheet with math questions that add seven. We have to solve as many questions as we can in two minutes. If we finish before the timer ends we write down how long we took to answer them in a little box at the bottom of the page. Sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge to do this but it's really fun. We all show the values of integrity and resilience from not giving up in maths because it is truly hard and challenging.

Sports Day by Aliza and Nate

On Tuesday the 10th of March we had Sports Day. We had sports day at the oval. All of the sport house teams were red , white, gold and blue. The first activity of the day was the one hundred metre race. We all ran really well and tried our best. We broke up into our age groups and competed in high jump, long jump, shotput, discuss, two hundred meter sprint and hurdles. The events were challenging but no one gave up! At the end of the day the Blue house ended up winning and we had a really great day even though is was hot.
