Grade 6 Report

In Grade 6 we have been exploring our Biological Science unit on adaptations and how living organisms survive in different environments. Throughout the term, students have been learning about the structural, behavioural, and physiological adaptations that help animals respond to selection pressures such as climate, predators, and food availability.

As part of their Speaking and Listening presentations, students have been challenged to design their own unique organism suited to a specific environment. They have been applying their scientific understanding in creative ways by considering what physical features, behaviours, and body systems their organism would need in order to survive.

In Week 4, students attended an excursion to the zoo as part of this unit of work. The sunny weather meant many animals were active throughout the day, allowing students to closely observe a range of species and their adaptations in action. Zoo educators shared their expertise with students, helping them identify how different adaptations support survival in particular environments and how these are linked to selection pressures such as climate, food sources, and predators. This provided valuable connections between classroom learning and real-world examples, while also giving students ideas to support the development of their own organisms and presentations.

Last week, we also welcomed families into the classroom as part of Education Week. Students had the opportunity to share their understanding of adaptations by completing a task together with the adults, and discuss the progress they have made on their presentations so far. It was pleasing to see students explaining their scientific thinking and engaging in conversations about their learning.

We are proud of the curiosity, creativity, and thoughtful work our Grade 6 students have demonstrated throughout this science unit.
