Grade 2 Report

This term, our Grade 2 students have been learning about sound and how it works through lots of fun, hands-on activities. They’ve been exploring how sounds are made by vibrations and experimenting with different ways to create sound using everyday objects and instruments. Along the way, they’ve been asking great questions, making predictions, and sharing what they’ve discovered.

We also enjoyed a visit from Mad About Science, where students explored how light and sound help us understand the world around us. They learned that we need light to see, that sound can travel through different materials, and that both light and sound are forms of energy that move in waves and can change into other types of energy.

Here are some of the activities we participated in:

  • We used a blind fold to help us understand what it might feel like to rely less on our sense of sight.
  • In small groups, we investigated which materials allow sound and light to travel through them.
  • Watched demonstrations showing how light and sound waves behave, including how echoes and reflections are created.
  • Observed how white light can be split into a rainbow of colours using a prism.
  • Explored how lenses work to form images, similar to the way our eyes and cameras work.
  • Investigated different optical tools that use lenses and mirrors to bend and direct light.
  • Experimented with how vibrations move and change to create sound energy.
