Year 4

Integrated Studies: Civics and Citizenship – Communities and Celebrations

As part of our Integrated Studies unit this term, we have been celebrating some cultural days, including Shrove Tuesday and Lunar New Year. On Shrove Tuesday, we enjoyed pancakes and researched the origins of this tradition of enjoying pancakes in countries around the world. We would like to thank Ms Steward for organising this celebration and cooking the pancakes. We would also like to thank Ms Ziskov for her assistance on the day, as well as Mrs Cotterell, Ms Patel and Mrs Lynch for kindly lending us their electric frying pans.

Mrs Cheuk shared about an important cultural celebration for her and her family – Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year. We learned about the origins of ancient traditions during this celebration, such as wearing the colour red and lighting firecrackers to ward off bad luck. The teachers followed the tradition of handing out red envelopes to younger people, which included the entire Year 4 cohort! To receive a red envelope with a treat inside, students were encouraged to say the new year greeting, ‘Xin Nian Kuai Le’, or Happy New Year!

Marimba

Year 4 students have been enjoying weekly Marimba lessons with Blake. They are looking forward to playing each of the three ensemble sections, which are melody, accompaniment and bass, as well as selecting songs they wish to learn during Marimba in the coming weeks.
