Year 7 Geography in Action

This term, our Year 7 Geography students have been investigating the concept of liveability and exploring what makes somewhere a great place to live. Through class discussions and activities, students examined the economic, social, and environmental factors that contribute to a community's liveability.

To bring their learning to life, students participated in a fieldwork excursion around Brunswick. Walking along Sydney Road, through Gilpin Park, and surrounding areas, students observed and assessed features of the local environment. They collected data, recorded observations, and considered how different aspects of the suburb contribute to the quality of life for residents.

Throughout this excursion, students demonstrated excellent curiosity and engagement. They asked thoughtful questions about local businesses, public spaces, transport options, community facilities, and environmental sustainability. Students were encouraged to think critically about how these features impact people's everyday lives and whether Brunswick can be considered a 'liveable' place.

Back in the classroom, students analysed their findings and used evidence gathered during fieldwork to support their conclusions. Many students identified strengths such as access to public transport, diverse local businesses, community spaces, and green areas, while also considering challenges and opportunities for improvement.

The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to apply their geographical skills in a real-world setting, while also deepening their understanding of and connection to their local community. By exploring familiar streets, public spaces and local facilities, students were able to engage directly with the environment in which they live, learn and interact. We were impressed by the enthusiasm, maturity and thoughtful observations demonstrated by our Year 7 students as they explored the liveability of Brunswick.
