Recently, both unior and senior Chinese language students participated in exciting excursions to Melbourne’s Chinatown.  These events were designed specifically for them to enjoy an authentic opportunity to engage with Chinese language and culture beyond the classroom,  and to connect their learning with

Our senior students (Years 10, 11 & 12) T began thier adventure with a hands-on Chinese Mahjong workshop. Students learned the basic rules, strategies and cultural significance of this traditional Chinese game. For many, it was their first experience playing Mahjong, and they quickly became engaged as they discovered the fun of the game, and the combination of skill, memory and strategy involved. The session sparked plenty of enthusiasm, with students eager to challenge one another and learn more about this important aspect of Chinese culture. Students were so engaged that many asked if they could play Mahjong again in future Chinese lessons or even start a Mahjong Club at school!

Following the workshop, the senior students enjoyed a delicious Chinese lunch featuring a variety of traditional dishes, including dumplings, steamed buns and spring onion pancakes. The meal provided an excellent opportunity to experience authentic Chinese cuisine while sharing conversation and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of Chinatown.

In the afternoon, students took part in a Chinatown Scavenger Hunt. Working collaboratively in groups, they followed a series of clues and challenges prepared by their teachers. Students explored the streets of Chinatown, located significant shops and landmarks, and captured group photos at each destination. The activity encouraged teamwork, observation skills and cultural awareness while allowing students to immerse themselves in Melbourne’s Chinese community.

Year 8 Chinese Excursion

Alina Qian

Teacher - Chinese (Mandarin)

Our junior, Year 8 Chinese language students  attended Chinese-language film screenings (with English subtitles) allowing them to engage with authentic language while gaining insight into contemporary Chinese culture and society. They also explored Chinatown and experienced Chinese language and culture in a real-world setting.

The excursion supported students in developing their intercultural understanding, broadening their global perspectives, and building confidence in connecting classroom learning with everyday experiences. It was wonderful to see students actively engaged, curious, and enthusiastic throughout the day.

At both of these events, our students demonstrated excellent behaviour, teamwork and curiosity. Their enthusiasm and active participation made the excursions highly successful and enjoyable learning experience for everyone. Experiences such as these bring language learning to life by connecting classroom theory with authentic experience and  foster a deeper appreciation of the many communities in which different languages  and cultures thrive.

It is wonderful to "bring language to life" and we look forward to providing more opportunities for our students to explore Chinese language and culture in meaningful and engaging ways.
