YEAR 7
Starting Well

Head of Year 7
The SMCC Mobile Phone Policy is in place for the benefit of all students, in particular to limit distractions during the school day (8.30am - 3.15pm) and enhance the social communication between students during recess and lunch times. This does leave time before and after school where students are accessing their mobile devices while on school campus and I want to highlight an important point in regard to their use.
The grounds of the College are deemed 'private property' and as such it is illegal to take photographic or video footage of anyone on campus without their consent. Adherence to this is vital in upholding the dignity and safety of our entire school community. Student behaviour that breaches this is considered serious and consequences in line with the school's behaviour management policy will be issued.
I seek your support in speaking with your child about the importance of respecting the privacy of all members of the St Mary's community and engaging in appropriate use of their mobile phones on school grounds. Please reach out if you have concerns around this issue.
Year 7 students have started their practical HPE lessons with activities focused on Leadership and collaboration. Students have been developing skills in problem solving, listening and working together.
Activities have included changing places along a bench, moving across a room silently on chairs and playing team tic tac toe.

A warm thank you is extended to all students who supported the College during Open Evening. Year 7 students were visible across the school participating as ushers, music performers, and supporting subject displays. One of St Mary’s Catholic College's greatest strengths is its welcoming community and I am grateful to all the Year 7 students who put their best food forward in their various roles during the evening to promote the school to the wider community.

The Feedback Survey is an important opportunity to gather valuable insights that help inform and strengthen practices across both the College and wider system. Survey outcomes are also reported in broad terms as part of our annual reporting requirements to government. The survey link will be emailed to all parents/carers on 25 May 2026.
