Term 3 - What's been happening in Science?
Prep–2 Science: Little Scientists, Big Discoveries!
It has been a wonderful term of wonder, discovery and hands-on learning for our Prep, 1/2 students! We began by thinking about how we can care for our special planet, exploring recycling, reusing and reducing waste and learning why it is so important to look after the Earth.
Our young scientists then became water detectives, investigating why clean water is so important for people, animals and plants. Students even tried their hand at cleaning dirty water using simple filters and discovered that keeping pollution out of our waterways is much better than trying to clean it up afterwards!
We also explored weather and seasons, heading outside as weather detectives to make
observations before becoming junior weather reporters and presenting their own weather forecasts!
Then, of course, we had to look up to the stars! Students became moon experts, investigating craters, moonlight and what makes our Moon so special. We then travelled through the Solar System, learning about the planets and creating our very own playdough planets and LEGO rockets!
It has been fantastic to see our youngest scientists asking questions, getting messy, building, creating and sharing their ideas throughout the term. There have certainly been some big discoveries from our little explorers!
Years 3/4 Science: Exploring Earth and Beyond!
This term, our Year 3/4 scientists have been busy discovering just how amazing our planet is — and wondering what might be waiting beyond it!
We began by investigating Earth’s resources, exploring where everyday objects come from and learning about the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources. Students then followed the journey of water from natural sources all the way to our taps, before getting hands-on with our LEGO water supply challenge! Our water investigations continued as we explored the water cycle, creating mini water cycles in bags and observing evaporation and condensation right before our eyes. Students even brought the journey of a raindrop to life through creative performances and a highlight was our water cycle song!
Then it was time to look up and beyond Earth! Students investigated day and night, the seasons and the movement of our planet before beginning an exciting space mission. Working as teams of space scientists, they researched a planet and tackled the big question: Could humans live anywhere else in our Solar System?
The term finished with our very own in class SPACE EXPO, where students share their discoveries in creative and imaginative ways — from news reports and documentaries to models, interviews and live broadcasts from space!
It has been a wonderful term of exploring, questioning, building and discovering, and we can't wait to see where our 3/4 scientists' curiosity takes them next!
Years 5/6 Science: From Earth to Space!
It has been an exciting term of discovery in Science for our Year 5/6 students! We began by investigating how our Earth’s surface changes, getting hands-on with rocks, weathering and erosion. Students then explored some of Earth’s most powerful natural events, including volcanoes and earthquakes, and researched how science and technology can help us respond to these hazards.
Then, it was time to blast off into space! Students explored the planets of our Solar System before taking on a very special challenge — designing and building a LEGO space colony! Each team had to use what they had learned about their planet to design a place where humans could potentially live.
We finished the term by investigating gravity, asking big questions about why astronauts float and what life might be like with different levels of gravity.
It has been wonderful to see our 5/6 scientists question, investigate, create and think beyond Earth this term. Who knows — perhaps we have some future astronauts, geologists or space engineers in the making!
