A letter to the Elwood College community.
Dear Elwood College Community,
Congratulations on your school review. Firstly, thank you for the excellent organisation in preparing for and hosting the review, and for your generous hospitality throughout the day. I would also like to sincerely thank the parents, staff and students who participated in focus groups and shared their honest reflections with the review panel. Your insights were invaluable in helping us understand the strengths of the college. Thank you also to the teachers who welcomed us into their classrooms and so openly shared their practice. There is much to celebrate at Elwood College.
One of the strongest messages we heard throughout the review was the quality of the relationships that exist within your community. Students and parents consistently spoke about the teachers at ElwoodCollege and the genuine care they show for young people.
They described teachers who know their students and create positive learning environments. This is reflected in your Attitudes to School Survey and staff survey results, which in many areas, outperform similar schools. The review panel also recognised the strong collaborative culture amongst staff and the genuine willingness to continue learning, refining practice and improving outcomes for students.
Staff spoke warmly about the support they provide one another, the trust that exists across teams and the collective commitment to continuous improvement. These are the conditions for sustained success. It was also evident that there has been a noticeable shift in classroom practice over the past two years. We observed calm, orderly classrooms where students were engaged in learning, and teachers demonstrated a shared understanding of the college's instructional model. There is clear momentum, and it is exciting to see the impact this work is beginning to have. As the college looks towards its next Strategic Plan, the direction is equally exciting.
The next phase is not about changing course but about continuing the work already underway. Further refining responsive teaching and reviewing the instructional model with greater precision and consistency will strengthen an already solid foundation. Building the capability of middle leaders will also be critical as the college pursues greater excellence, challenge and rigour across every classroom.
The panel was equally excited by the continued investment in student wellbeing. The work to strengthen the wellbeing curriculum, create a distinct identity for each year level and enhance transitions and students sense of pride and belonging will further enrich the student experience. Likewise, the development of a whole-school pathways scope and sequence from Years 7–12 represents an exciting opportunity to provide students with greater clarity, purpose and choice as they progress through the college.
Elwood College is in a great position to build on the strong foundations that have been established. The commitment of your leadership team, staff and broader community provides every reason to be optimistic about what comes next. I look forward to watching Elwood College continue to strengthen its practice and expand the opportunities, pathways and outcomes it provides for every student.
