Let's Grow
This year, the Middle Years students from It’s Not Just Dirt (a Science elective looking at Agricultural Studies) are hard at work growing a selection of tomatoes from seed. Throughout Term 3, the class chose which varieties they wanted to grow and sowed the seed. They considered which varieties are best suited to our climate and the requirements for growing tomato plants from seed. As well as looking at the science of growing the plants, we had to consider things from a business perspective too – from customer preferences when selecting which varieties to grow, to calculating the unit cost of growing each individual tomato.
Mr McClure’s Science 2050 class have also been hard at work developing a heating system to protect the seedlings from frost throughout the spring, as tomatoes are frost tender. The seedlings had a very productive break over the holidays and have been growing quickly, meaning the class have been busy repotting them from their seedling punnets into individual pots. It is hoped their hard work all pays off and we will have a range of tomato plants for sale in November, including at the Beaufort Agricultural Show. Watch this space.
