Be Wise Be Kind

On Monday 16th October, Beaufort Secondary College will be hosting Dolly’s Dream and the Pat Cronin Be Wise program. Both programs aim to deliver engaging and thought-provoking content around some of the current challenges and issues to which adolescents can be exposed.

The Dolly’s Dream workshops are designed to cater for the age and year level of students. The Year 7 and 8 students will be participating in a workshop focussing on digital dilemmas - knowing what to do, banter v’s bullying, upstander vs bystander and making the internet a safe and kind place for all. The Year 9, 10 and 11 students will participate in a workshop focussing on digital dramas – taking control, the ugly truth about bullying, ‘showing up’ for yourself and others and making the internet a safe and kind place for all.

In 2016, after celebrating a football match, 19 year old Pat Cronin was hit from behind trying to help his mate get up off the ground. Several days later his family made the agonising decision to turn off his life support. Since then, they have worked tirelessly to educate young people about the dangers of a coward punch and how to look after your friends. The Be Wise presentation aims to address issues around social violence, anger and aggression, and provide some strategies on how to prevent situations escalating to violence.

Both these programs have been delivered to tens of thousands of students around Australia and have been well received. The messages that are shared in both of these presentations are important and topical and are designed and presented in an age-appropriate manner, however, due to the nature of these stories there may be some content that some students may find upsetting. Students will be well-supported throughout the day, with opportunities pre and post the workshops to discuss and unpack.
