Drawing Under the Dome

Earlier this week the Year 11 Visual Communication Design class and members of the Art Academy had the opportunity to draw inspiration from Melbourne’s iconic Royal Exhibition Building during an immersive drawing workshop.  Students experienced the opulent dome and rich murals of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site through a 90-minute facilitated drawing class presented in partnership with the Italian Australian Foundation.

Led by artist Richard Payne, the workshop invited participants to explore light, form and detail beneath the timeless classical architecture and intricate decorative elements of the building.  Year 11 students will use the observational drawings and ideas developed during the excursion to help inspire their next architectural design task.

Throughout the workshop, students practised and refined their perspective drawing skills while working within the unique environment of the grand exhibition space.  Having uninterrupted access to the magnificent interior of the Royal Exhibition Building made this a memorable and valuable learning experience for all involved.
