“You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”
― Ray Bradbury
Renovations commence in the KRC
Over the Term break, we started some planned renovation work to increase the collection space and rearrange the layout to better accommodate our staff and students alongside our books and resources. Further works will happen over the summer break as we work towards our new design plan whilst minimising disruption.
Reading Material
Raymond Mar, a professor of psychology at York University in Toronto, has found that reading fiction is a much stronger predictor of verbal abilities than non-fiction. Language abilities are a great predictor of things like educational achievement and then later on, career achievement and success. Reading fiction also improves memory, information synthesis, perspective taking, empathy and social knowledge, and expands world view.
The KRC has a large collection specifically designed for and by our students, and we encourage students to suggest books that they want to read or genres they are interested in. We constantly buy new books to keep up with current interests and topics, with both fiction and non-fiction works in most interest areas.
Try and read a little bit outside of your comfort zone - you never know what you might find.
Please let the KRC staff know if there is a book you’d like us to acquire for you to read.
