Academic Culture

Ms Carol Roberts - Deputy Principal Academic Culture

Welcome to Term 4!

The commencement of this term has been one of joy and community. Last week's Open Day was a beautiful celebration of all that is on offer for boys at St Patrick's College. It was wonderful to see our community come together and showcase the breadth of learning opportunities that make our College such a special place. Thursday’s Speech Day provided another wonderful opportunity to gather as a community and recognise the significant contributions and achievements of so many of our students, across such a diverse range of areas. These occasions remind us that education is about so much more than academic achievement alone, and that every boy has unique gifts, talents and contributions worthy of celebration.

We also enjoyed our Year 7 Semester 2 Instrumental Performance Evening, which was a wonderful celebration of the boys' musical learning. It was a joy to see their growth in confidence, skill and musicianship, and to recognise the progress they have made throughout the semester. Additionally, our more experienced performers took part in our Music Soiree. I would like to extend my congratulations to all the boys involved, and thanks to our dedicated Music staff for their encouragement and support.

Our VCE Arts and Technology Showcase was another highlight, providing a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the creativity, skill and hard work of our senior students. The standard of work on display was exceptional, reflecting not only the talents of our boys but also the dedication and guidance of their teachers. It was particularly pleasing to see the pride with which students shared their work and the strong support of families and staff who came together to celebrate their achievements.

Celebrating our Year 12 Students

This week marks an important milestone for our Year 12 students as they conclude their formal classes at the College. It is a significant moment in their educational journey, and one that provides an opportunity to reflect on their growth and the many experiences that have shaped their time at St Pat's.

I would also like to extend my congratulations to our VCE Vocational Major students who completed their studies at the end of Term 3. We acknowledge the perseverance and commitment they have demonstrated in reaching this important milestone, and we look forward to formally celebrating their achievements at the Valedictory Celebration later this term.

For our Year 12 students preparing for their VCE examinations, the conclusion of classes is an important milestone, but it is not yet the finish line. The coming weeks provide an invaluable opportunity to consolidate learning, revise, and ensure that students are well prepared for their upcoming exams. I encourage our boys to remain focused, maintain productive study routines and continue to draw upon the support of their teachers as they approach this final stage of their secondary education.

We are extremely proud of our Year 12 cohort and wish each of them every success in the weeks ahead.

2027 Subject Selections and Timetabling

Thank you to all students and families for their engagement with the 2027 subject selection process through Term 3. Choosing subjects and pathways is an important part of each student's educational journey, and we appreciate the engagement and conversations that have taken place between students, families and staff.

With subject selections now submitted, we are well underway with the complex task of constructing our 2027 timetable. This involves considering student subject preferences, class structures, staffing, teacher expertise and the range of learning opportunities we are able to offer.

Our priority is to develop a timetable that supports the learning needs of our students while providing the broadest possible range of pathways and opportunities. As this work progresses, we will be in contact with individual students and families where further conversations regarding subject choices or pathways may be required.

We look forward to sharing further information as arrangements are finalised.

Looking Ahead: Head Start 2027

An important feature of our Term 4 learning program is Head Start, which will take place during the final two weeks of term, commencing on Monday 23 November and concluding on Friday 4 December 2026, which will be the final day for students.

All students currently in Years 7–11 will participate in Head Start, providing them with an opportunity to begin their 2027 learning programs ahead of the new school year.

Head Start is much more than an introduction to new subjects. It is a valuable opportunity for students to establish relationships with their teachers and peers, become familiar with the expectations of their new classes and begin engaging with the knowledge and skills that will underpin their learning in 2027.

Importantly, it also enables our teachers to gain a clearer understanding of where students are in their learning, recognising their strengths and identifying areas where additional support or extension may be beneficial. This allows us to build upon prior learning and establish a strong foundation for continued growth.

By commencing new learning ahead of the break, students gain a valuable advantage, allowing them to approach the new school year with greater confidence and familiarity. The program also brings fresh energy and enthusiasm to the final weeks of term, providing an opportunity for students to look ahead with optimism and excitement.

We look forward to welcoming new students joining us in 2027 to participate in Head Start, helping them begin building connections with their teachers, peers and the broader College community.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our students, families and staff for their continued commitment to all we do here at the College. There is much to celebrate, and much still to look forward to, as we work together to ensure every boy is supported and encouraged to achieve his personal best.
