Middle School

Mr Tom Nash, Head of Middle School

As we settle into Term 4, it has been pleasing to see the term begin in a productive and positive manner. Students have returned with good energy and purpose, and classrooms have quickly returned to routines that support learning and growth. It is always a busy term and one that seems to gather momentum very quickly. Before we know it, Headstart will be upon us, students will be commencing next year's coursework, and the next group of Year 7 students will be arriving at the College. Please be reminded that Tuesday, 1 December is a student free day for 2026 Year 7 students as we welcome 2027 Year 7 cohort for their Orientation Day.

A key area of focus throughout Semester 2 has been our student entry and exit procedures. These routines may seem simple, but they play an important role in setting the tone for the day and ensuring that the College environment remains calm, orderly and safe. The improvements we have seen in this space have been encouraging. Students are becoming increasingly familiar with expectations surrounding movement throughout the College, and we thank families for their ongoing support in reinforcing these expectations.

Our first Middle School Assembly for the term provided a wonderful opportunity to bring together students from Years 7 to 9 and set a positive direction for the weeks ahead. One of the highlights was a fantastic performance from the Percussion Ensemble, whose talent and enthusiasm were warmly received by staff and students alike.

We were also fortunate to hear from Mr Josh Morris as part of a question-and-answer session. As a proud member of a three-generation St Patrick's College family and a former student himself, Mr Morris shared fond memories of his time at the College along with some valuable advice for our current students. The conversation also provided students with the opportunity to get to know Mr Morris a little better and gain an appreciation for the strong connection that he and his family have with the College community.

The assembly also allowed us to revisit the expectations we hold for all members of the Middle School community. Respect for self, others and the College environment continues to underpin everything we do. Taking pride in presentation, engaging positively in learning, demonstrating kindness and making responsible choices all contribute to a successful Middle School experience.

There are many other positive initiatives taking place across the Middle School. Several Year 7 Homerooms have recently begun trialling morning journaling activities, providing students with an opportunity to reflect, set goals and prepare themselves for the day ahead. Early feedback has been extremely positive, with students appreciating the chance to pause and focus before commencing their lessons.

Beyond the classroom, co-curricular involvement continues to thrive across the Middle School. During the recent holidays, a number of students proudly represented the College at both the ACC Cross Country Championships and the Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships. Particular congratulations should go to Ollie Ryan and Archer Spackman, who claimed medals at both events. See the Sport report for further details of the boys' success.

Another highlight from late Term 3 was the recognition of Xxavier Ballinger, who received an Order of Australia Association Student Citizenship Award. Xxavier was formally acknowledged during a presentation at Ballarat Town Hall, recognising his contribution to the community and the values he consistently demonstrates both within and beyond the College. It was wonderful to see Xxavier recognised in such a significant way and his achievement serves as a reminder of the positive impact that young people can have when they commit to serving others and contributing positively to their communities.

As we move further into the term, we have already seen strong participation from our rowing students, with St Patrick's crews regularly visible training on Lake Wendouree as the season begins to take shape. Likewise, excitement is building around the College Production of Grease, which features a number of Middle School students both on stage and behind the scenes. Opportunities such as these are an important part of the St Patrick's experience, allowing students to develop confidence, teamwork, commitment and a sense of belonging beyond the classroom.

There are also several significant events on the horizon. One of the highlights will be the Year 9 Camp, taking place later this term. We look forward to providing our Year 9 students with a memorable experience as they begin to close an important chapter of their time in the Middle School. The camp will offer opportunities for challenge, reflection and relationship-building as students start to look ahead to their future as members of the Senior School.

As the term progresses, many students will also commence preparation for examinations and end-of-semester assessment tasks. Staff will continue to support boys with revision strategies, organisation and preparation; however, the encouragement students receive at home remains equally important. Conversations about planning, study habits and personal responsibility can make a significant difference to a student's confidence and readiness as assessment periods approach.

Finally, this term marks an important milestone for our Year 12 students as they approach graduation and the conclusion of their time at St Patrick's College. As younger students, many of our Middle School boys look up to the senior students around the College, and there is much they can learn from their example.

One of the most meaningful traditions associated with the Year 12 Final Day is the opportunity for students to read a letter they wrote to themselves as a Year 7 student. It is often a powerful and emotional experience, providing perspective on how far they have come and the growth that has occurred throughout their time at the College.

In the coming weeks, our current Year 7 students will undertake this same activity, writing a letter to their future selves that will be carefully stored away until their own final days at St Patrick's College. It is a special opportunity for reflection and goal setting, and one that encourages students to think about the young men they hope to become during their time at the College.

As always, I thank families for their ongoing support of the Middle School and look forward to sharing more positive stories and achievements as the term unfolds.
